Syndicate Part 1

Heero looked around the dorm room, satisfied that he'd put everything away. The single room was small, but enough for his few belongings.

He didn't have plans to be there very long.

Someone knocked on his door and he went to open it. On the other side stood a young man with a long braid. A welcoming grin and sparkling eyes dominated his features. His black tie with maroon and white stripes, opposite of the usual maroon tie with black and white stripes, told Heero that he was a senior student.

The extra pin he wore on the lapel of his blazer told Heero that he was looking at a member of the dorm committee.

"Hi!" A hand was promptly offered. "My name is Duo Maxwell. I'm the floor advisor here."

"Heero Yuy. Pleasure." Heero took the hand for a moment.

"Nice to meet you, Heero Yuy. My room is the one right next to yours," Duo said, gesturing to the door on the adjacent wall. "You can knock on my door any time you have any questions or concerns."

"Thank you."

"So, a transfer student, huh? We don't get too many of those."

"I'd think not," Heero replied. The Academy was expensive in terms of tuition and advanced in terms of academic standards.

Heero would like to say that it had taken effort to enrol into the school, especially mid-semester, but in reality, he hadn't really had the chance to try.

The Syndicate had taken care of everything for him, not that anyone was any wiser.

"Where're you originally from?" Duo asked curiously.

"L1."

"Hey, a fellow colony brat!" Duo was about to say more when someone hollered his name down the hall. He waved his hand. "Listen, like I said, don't hesitate to look for me if you need anything. It's my job to help you out. Why don't we have dinner together later? I'll knock on your door when it's time?"

Heero nodded. "That would be great. Thank you."

With a wave, Duo jogged off. Heero watched the braid sway back and forth as Duo caught up with the other student, then closed the door to his room.

Powering up his laptop, Heero pulled out his cell phone, flipping it open. Tapping a few keys, he twisted the top screen so that it was perpendicular to the keypad of the phone, allowing a holographic camera to project a 3D image.

It wasn't that Heero needed any confirmation; he'd looked at the image many times before he set foot into the Academy.

Plugging in a USB key to hide his net access, Heero logged onto the secured Syndicate portal and composed a short message.

Arrived. Target sighted. Awaiting orders to commence mission.

Exactly two minutes later, he received a reply that made him sit back in thought.

01, await further instruction.

It was rare for the Syndicate to deviate from original mission plans. The only other time it had happened was the very first, and only time, Heero had ever failed a mission. He'd since decided that he hated mission deviations.

One failure on his record was enough. He didn't plan on failing any other missions.

Now what?
