Perfect and Lopsided Valentines

Once little Duo entered the classroom, he raced about to his classmates, depositing a small, white envelope in each one's hands.

"Happy Valentine's Day!" he greeted each and every classmate and in turn, they smiled and some even handed a small envelope back to Duo.

Heero entered the classroom and went to his cubby, taking off his mitts, then hat, scarf and jacket in that exact order. Then, he leaned down to pull his indoor shoes out of the bottom cubby shelf before taking off his boots and leaving them in front of his cubby to dry. Turning, he was surprised by Relena, who handed him an envelope.

"Happy Valentine's Day, Heero!" Relena said, smiling happily. "I hope you like it!"

Once she had wandered off, Heero blinked at the pink object in his hand and opened it. Inside sat an elaborate pink heart with his name and a little poem that Heero had trouble understand.

"Roses are red, violets are blue. You love Relena, and Relena loves you," he read. "I don't love Relena. Mom said not to love too easily," he mused out loud, not that he had understood why his mother had said such a strange thing in the early morning. Then, he blinked as someone jumped to an excited halt in front of him. Duo was almost bouncing on the spot.

"Hey, Heero!" Duo frowned a little. "Aw, I wasn't the first to give you one." He thrust something at Heero.

"Good morning, Duo," Heero greeted his classmate before looking down and studying the second object in his hand. He handed the pink heart from Relena to Duo, who held it as Heero opened the white envelope and pulled out a red heart. His name was scrawled on it and when he flipped it over, he saw the words 'from Duo' on the back.

"Heero got a different valentine! Not fair!" Hilde protested, reaching to snatch at the red heart. Then she paused and smiled. "Oh! It's not like the one he gave to me, Heero! Mine was bought from the store!" With that, Hilde skipped off to her own friends.

"Thank you, Duo," Heero said solemnly. "But why is mine different?"

"Oh!" Duo grinned. "Because Mom paid for those ones from the store. I got this one all by myself!"

"You have money to buy your own construction paper?" Heero asked, a little surprised and in awe that his friend had that kind of money.

"No, of course not!" Duo leaned closer to tell his secret. "I planned out the perfect plan and took it from Ms. Noin's desk when she wasn't looking!"

Heero nodded; to take anything from Ms. Noin's desk was no easy feat. He examined the heart in his hand again. "How come one side is bigger than the other?"

"Well..." Duo scuffed the toe of his shoe against the floor. "I had a bit of trouble with the scissors and it was dark in my room because it was bedtime and that was the only time I could make it since Mom doesn't like me playing with scissors. But I wasn't playing with them, I was using them!" he declared. Then, he tilted his head and grinned. "Just pretend that it's okay, please Heero?"

Heero nodded, accepting Duo's answer. Pulling a pair of safety scissors from his backpack, he carefully cut open the pink envelope he had received from Relena. Duo watched curiously as Heero selected a pre-sharpened red pencil crayon from his pencil case and crouched, quickly covering a large spot in the center of the once-envelope-that-was-now-a-piece-of-paper. Heero then coloured a similar spot on the flip side.

Eyes narrowed in concentration, Heero carefully folded the pink paper in half and picked up his scissors again. His tongue stuck out a little as he carefully cut a shape from the portion that he had colored in red. Blue eyes glanced at Duo before Heero quickly turned his back to his friend.

"Hey, what are you doing, Heero?" Duo asked. He was extremely curious; Heero was doing strange things to an envelope.

"Here." Heero turned around again and handed something to Duo. Duo blinked at the red object, smoothed down with pencil crayon colouring. "You're supposed to open it."

Duo complied and unfolded the paper to see a heart. His name was on it and he saw upon flipping it over that the words 'from Heero' were written neatly in thin black marker. "Hey, thanks Heero! It's perfect!"

Heero smiled. "Am I supposed to say Happy Valentine's Day?"

Duo grinned and hugged his friend. "Happy Valentine's Day, Heero!"
