His Incredible Eyes

Incredible.

This is the word I use most often to describe the man lying next to me. His braid off to the side, one arm up by his head, the other flung across his stomach, blanket kicked down to his waist; he looked like he didn't have a care in the world.

I couldn't help but trace his torso with my eyes, the path lit by the early morning sun. He was sound asleep, his mouth slightly open, and I stayed as still as I could, propped up on one elbow.

This was the man who grew from the young teenager that had outsmarted me when I had first landed on Earth. He'd had the sense to use a flare to prevent me from seeing his face; I'd only used my hand to cover some of my features.

This was the man who grew from the young teenager that thought he would die by my hand, but inspired me to rescue him. The young man who had broken me out of a hospital, whose shouts and voice had kicked my survival instincts into place.

The young man who had fought hard, the one who made my heart clench when I saw him in the hands of our enemy, beaten and awaiting execution.

This was the man who taught me how to live, how to love and how to be loved. The latter two are distinctly different and yet similar. He'd taught me the better things in life and he'd taught me to experience them all with him.

This was the incredible man who loved me for my past, my present and my future. Who walked alongside me, who cared for me unconditionally. The man whose beautiful smile warmed my body, whose eyes could see into my heart and whose soul touched my very own.

It was almost time for us to get up for work, so I reached forward and traced his abs, stopping just at his hand and setting mine on top of it.

His fingers tangled with mine, squeezing as he shifted and stretched before cracking eyes open, his sleepy gaze immediately followed by a drowsy smile.

I pulled my hand from his and traced my fingers up his chest and neck until I was cupping his cheek. He leaned into my touch only for a moment before turning towards me. I let our noses touch a moment before tilting my head to kiss him, reaching past him to the bedside table where the alarm clock was just about to ring. Clicking it off, I rested a bit of my weight on him, feeling his hand trace my side up to my shoulder before giving it a squeeze. I backed away and looked into his eyes once more.

"You have the most incredible eyes, Duo," I said softly. I told him that every morning, and I know I will continue to for a very long time. It may be redundant and thus, not very romantic, but Duo knows that I mean much, much more than that, for he was the one who told me that the eyes were windows to the heart and soul.

And as long as he knew what I meant, then that was all that would ever matter.
