A little bit of something for Sharon, for the prompt "I was thinking today that I'd like to read something where Heero is a little jealous of Relena spending time with Duo. Everyone always assumes Relena is involved with Heero. I thought it would be cute if someone thinks she's with Duo for a change.".

Heero's Jealousy

"I'm home!" Duo called out as he toed off his shoes then put his jacket away. He peeked into the living room to see Heero on the couch watching the news. "Hey. Have dinner yet?"

"Yeah." Heero nodded as Duo came to sit beside him. "Where'd you go?"

"Out for dinner at that Italian restaurant by the Art Museum."

"The one that Relena likes?"

"Yeah, it was her suggestion, actually."

Heero's eyebrows furrowed as he looked at Duo. "You had dinner with Relena...again?"

"Yeah, why?"

"When did two become so close?"

Duo shrugged. "That thing, that banquet two months ago? I was assigned to be the close guard for Relena and was her guest at the event. We talked a bit and it turns out that we've got a few common interests."

"Oh."

Duo peered at Heero, then quirked a grin. "Are you mad that I didn't mention I had dinner plans until just before I clocked out? I promise I'll tell you earlier next time. You didn't have dinner prepared for me too, did you?"

"No."

Duo studied Heero for another moment, then rest a hand on Heero's shoulder. "Look at me."

Heero turned to him, aware of Duo's warmth seeping through to his shoulder. He had to fight a shiver.

"You don't like it when I hang out with Relena, do you?" Duo asked.

"It's not my business." Heero wasn't going to admit that he didn't like it, not to Duo's face.

"Hey buddy, if you're interested in her and you want me to back off, I will."

Heero took a moment to digest the words. "You'll back off?" he asked. Did that imply that Duo was interested in Relena?

"Yeah, of course," Duo said. "If you like her, I'll back off if it bugs you."

Heero stood up abruptly. "I'm not interested in Relena, not in that way," he said gruffly. "You don't have to back off."

"You're annoyed," Duo said, standing. "Why?"

"I'm not."

"Heero!" Duo blocked Heero's way. "You're my best friend. I think I can figure out if you're annoyed or not. Don't lie to me."

Heero glared at Duo's chest. "I'm not annoyed," he said, looking up at Duo.

Duo looked hurt, then angry. "Fine," he said. "There's no point in continuing this conversation if you're just going to lie." He turned and left the room.

"Wait!" Heero stood at the entrance of the hallway and Duo paused. "I'm really not annoyed, not with you, okay? But if we're best friends I just thought...thought you might tell me that you found someone you wanted to pursue."

Duo slowly turned around and blinked at Heero for a moment. "Someone I wanted to pursue?"

"Relena," Heero pointed out.

"Relena?" Duo asked incredulously. "Since when? When did I say I was interested in Relena?"

"You just said...said you'd back off!"

"I thought you liked Relena, and thought you were mad that I hung out with her! So I told you that I would back off if you wanted me to!"

"So...you and Relena are just..."

"Friends!"

Heero sighed.

"What the hell is going on, Heero?" Duo asked. "Even if I was interested in Relena, why should that annoy you? Do you think I don't deserve her or something?"

Heero shook his head, knowing that Duo was getting prickly and defensive. "No, of course I didn't think that!"

"Then what's the big deal?" Duo snapped.

"I'm jealous, okay?" Heero mumbled, watching Duo's expression from the corner of his eye. It took a moment for Duo's anger to turn into surprise.

"Jealous?" Duo asked. "What the hell for?"

"I don't know." Heero shrugged. "I didn't realize I would be...and then I already was."

Duo shook his head, exasperated. "Heero, just because I hang out with her, doesn't mean I am not friends with you! You're my best friend, okay? No one is going to take that place from you." He reached out and punched Heero lightly on the shoulder. "Okay?"

"Okay," Heero said, feeling like a chastised child.

Duo lowered his hand. "We still on for the gym tomorrow morning, then?"

"Yeah."

"Okay. I'm going to go take a shower."

Heero watched Duo return to his room before he went to turn the TV off. He listened to Duo's hum as he crossed from bedroom to bathroom, before the bathroom door shut and Duo's humming was covered by the sound of water. Locking up the apartment, Heero went to his own room and lay down, rubbing his hand down his face.

There really hadn't been anything to be jealous of. Heero felt like an idiot.

But at least he was the idiot who was named Duo Maxwell's Best Friend.

That meant, if he could just confirm that Duo had been telling the truth when, a few weeks ago, he'd drunkenly told Heero he was into guys...

Then maybe Heero would have the chance of staking his claim and never having to worry about being jealous again.

He grinned at the door, a predator having marked his potential prey.

It was time to aim for a promotion from 'best friend' to something better.
