Heero's Family

The gentle kiss on his forehead woke him; even so he was too comfortable to open his eyes.

"Sleep," a familiar voice whispered. "It's about to storm. I didn't want it to startle you."

He rolled onto his side to snuggle closer to the body next to him. "Thanks," he murmured, although he wasn't sure if he could be heard.

Something shifted on top of him and he sighed, coming even more awake now. "Heero?"

The body below him shifted and the weight on his hip vanished. "No," Heero answered. "Hope."

Duo cracked an eye open and nuzzled Heero's warm skin for a moment before he turned to look down their bodies. Hope was standing on Heero now, looking back at him.

"Sometimes, I don't feel like sharing," he said in an almost petulant tone. "How am I supposed to lie on top of you when she's there?"

Heero chuckled, watching Hope's eyes twitch toward him. "Sharing is caring?" he said, repeating the words Duo often said to him.

Duo snorted. "Sharing ice cream is caring. Sharing the hot water in the shower is caring. Sharing fun is caring. In any case, she is not sharing." He wormed a hand from under the blankets and reached down to touch Hope, letting her nuzzle his hand. "I don't mind sharing," he added after a moment. "I just need her to move so I can get on top of you first. Then she can sit on me."

"What am I, furniture?" Heero asked, amused.

"No, you are warmth and comfort," Duo answered, then sighed. "What are you doing up so early?"

"It's not that early. It's the time we usually get up on a weekday. Just a little darker."

Duo was surprised that his biological clock was a little slow, even if he tended to be like that on stormy days like this.

As if echoing his thought, there was a flash of lightening; Hope tensed under his hand. A moment later there was a loud rumble of thunder. Looking back at Hope, he saw that she was staring out the window, a little nervous.

Heero had left the window open a couple of inches last night, and now the blinds rattled with the wind. Hope crouched, ears twitching towards the sounds, wary.

Duo shifted, finding his way out of the cocoon of blankets. He gave no thought to his nakedness as he walked over to the window and closed it.

Heero watched as Duo's body was lit up momentarily by a flash of lightning. The light vanished before he could catch more than a glimpse, and just as the thunder rumbled seemingly overhead, Duo was sliding back under the blankets. Heero shifted to sit up against the headboard and pet the spot next to him.

Duo's body was a little chilled as he crawled towards Heero and settled next to him, laying an arm across Heero's waist as he leaned his cheek against Heero's shoulder. Heero's hand rubbed his arm as if trying to warm it. Hope settled between Heero's legs, finding warmth from the outstretched limbs and the blanket. She didn't seem bothered by the next flash of lightning, or the thunder; only taking the moment to nuzzle Heero's knee.

"You know, the first time I saw lightning it scared me and captivated me," Duo murmured.

"Hm?" Heero leaned his cheek against Duo's head. "Why?"

"We didn't get lightning on the colony. At least, not on L2," Duo explained. "The first time I was on Earth and I saw lightning, I whipped out my knife, unsure of where the light was coming from. It took a moment to see it in zigzagging through the sky. It was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen."

Heero nodded. "I know what you mean. Like the first time I saw Earth from space. And the first time I looked up to space from Earth. Very different feelings."

Duo snickered. "And then it rained and I was like a drowned rat. I thought to myself that storms were only cool if you were indoors or only if you chose to be outdoors when you have a place to stay. I didn't have a choice that time."

"Choose to be outdoors?" Heero asked. "Don't tell me you want to go out there now."

"Not now," Duo said. "Too comfortable. Maybe next time."

"Over my dead body."

"Why? The whole one with nature thing, isn't it cool?" Duo asked.

"Yea, and when you get pneumonia, who is it that has to take care of you?"

"What, you don't like taking care of me?"

"You and I both know you're one of the worst patients."

"Takes one to know one."

Heero waited until the sound of the thunder passed before he spoke again. "Besides, I do like taking care of you...preferably in other situations not involving illness."

"Oh?"

"I'd show you if I didn't have a cat between my legs."

Duo shifted, the hand trailing down between Heero's legs. "I think you have more than a cat between your legs."

"Duo," Heero said warningly. "I told you I absolutely refuse to...when Hope is here."

Duo released Heero with a sigh. "And it doesn't look like she's moving."

"No," Heero agreed, looking down where Hope was snuggled.

"I bet you we're the only ones who have a cat intent on keeping us celibate," Duo said.

Heero chuckled. "Maybe if we got her a companion she'd lay off on us?"

Duo shook his head. "No. With our luck, I'd end up with a cat between my legs too, and between the two of them, we wouldn't be getting any at home. We'd have to find a motel, or a dark parking lot, one of the many rooms in Quatre's house, or maybe a janitorial closet somewhere."

"Please tell me you don't actually want to," Heero pleaded.

"What, Heero Yuy doesn't like a bit of adventure?"

Heero nuzzled Duo. "No, I just happen to like you all to myself, and all of the choices you gave, except the motel, leave us in positions to be caught."

"You don't get caught if you're good."

"That is not something I want to be good at."

They lapsed into silence, just listening to the rain against the window and the thunder fading into the distance.

"Thank you, Heero."

"Hm?"

"For waking me up."

"I didn't want you choking me to death when you were startled."

Duo hit Heero's chest lightly. "I was trying to be grateful there, you know."

"I rephrase. You're most welcome and it's something I think you'd do for me too."

Duo dropped a kiss onto Heero's skin. "Damn right," he murmured. "There are tons of things I'd do for you, Heero."

"I know," Heero murmured. "And I, for you."

As if she understood them, Hope shifted, opening her eyes and looking at them.

"Okay, for you too, spoiled kitty," Duo said affectionately. Heero pet Hope and kissed Duo's head. Then he chuckled, watching Duo nudge at Hope, trying to persuade her to leave her spot, and perhaps the room, so that he could have his wicked way with Heero. Hope took his nudging for scratches under the chin and purred in response, not moving from her place.

He wouldn't say it to Duo, but at that moment, he felt a little like he was dealing with two pets. He loved them both, and he knew that they loved him. They formed his little family, and he was their family.

That was all that mattered, and he would spoil them both and do anything for them so long as they were happy.
