Notes: Not beta-read. This is a part of the babysiting adventures universe, inspired by Sharon's prompt "Babysitting adventures for uncles Heero, Duo, Trowa and Quatre. Wufei and Relena are the parents, of course". I should state now that the little drabbles in this universe will not be chronological at all!

Close To My Heart

Ever since Relena had returned to work, tucking Leila in wasn't always a part of her schedule. She'd meant to ask Leila a question since last week, but each day she'd returned home to find that the housekeeper and nanny, Grace, had already tucked her in.

Tonight, however, Relena pulled the covers up to Leila's chin, making sure her Uncle Heero bear was tucked in close along with Mr. Brown. With a smile, she stretched out on top of the covers, lying close to her daughter. Brushing her hair from her face, Relena studied Leila's face for a moment. This little person had come from her. Had been made by her and her loving husband. Briefly, Relena considered the night that Leila may have been conceived.

She could remember holding Wufei close afterwards, rubbing his side as he settled comfortably, smelling of sweat, sex and something that Relena could only classify as 'Wufei'.

Shaking herself from her distraction, she smiled down. "Sweetheart, what do you think we should give Baba for his birthday this year?"

"A puppy!"

"For Baba, not you," she said with a smile.

"Oh. A kitty, then?"

"Any other ideas?" she asked, brushing Leila's cheek lightly.

"Books? Baba likes books." Leila looked thoughtful.

"But we gave him a book last year, remember? A book of Chinese folk tales to read to you?" Wufei had been looking for a good storybook to learn tales from, preferably something with little lessons so that Leila could learn from them, and Relena had found the perfect book for him. In exchange, Wufei read them to Leila only when Relena was around, sharing the stories and his quiet voice, with their daughter curled between them.

"What do you want to give Baba?" Leila asked.

"I don't know," Relena confessed.

"You can give Baba a dozen kisses!" Leila said excitedly. "Uncle Duo said he'd give Uncle Heero that!"

Relena laughed, wondering what Wufei would think of Duo talking to Leila about kissing Heero. It wasn't that Wufei was a prude, and he wanted Leila to grow up knowing love and affection, but it didn't mean he embraced the topic the way Duo did. "I don't know," Relena mused. "We can both give Baba kisses on his birthday."

"When is Baba's birthday?"

"Next week."

"Buy him a baby," Leila said wisely. "You have a whole week to find one, Mommy!"

Relena laughed. She wanted to tell Leila that you didn't buy babies, but then she didn't think Leila would understand. It wasn't a topic she wanted to broach with her daughter; at least, not for a few years yet.

"I know!" Leila squirmed and pulled out the necklace she wore. "Give Baba something to carry all the time!" There was a piece of jade on her chain; Relena had chided Wufei for giving Leila something to wear all the time, fearing that she could choke by accident, but Wufei had been adamant that Leila wore it. Many loved children wore a pendant and none of them ever died of strangulation, he'd told her. Knowing that the jade was something Wufei had received from his grandmother when he was a baby; knowing that it was perhaps the only thing Wufei had of his grandmother, Relena had conceded.

It sounded like a good idea. Relena suddenly remembered a design she'd seen of interlocked rings. "Good idea, baby," she whispered. Kissing Leila's forehead, she talked softly with her daughter until the little girl fell asleep.

A week later, Leila ran into the kitchen early in the morning, a box in hand as she approached Wufei.

"Baba!" she squealed, arms raised so he would pick her up. "Happy Birthday!" she said loudly as he settled her onto his hip, not caring that the action could wrinkle his uniform.

"Thank you, baby," he said softly, accepting her kiss and kissing her back.

"I have a present for you from Mommy and I!" Leila said excitedly. Wufei set her onto the kitchen counter and took the box. Relena kissed Leila good morning and stood next to Wufei with an arm around his waist, waiting for him to open the box.

Wufei pulled out the silver necklace where three circles were interlocked, one visibly smaller than the others. Without any explanation he understood it; the circles represented him and his little family and he was meant to carry them with him.

"Thank you," he said, kissing Relena deeply before kissing Leila. Relena put the necklace on for him, and Wufei immediately lifted the pendant up, kissing it.

"It was our idea!" Leila boasted. "But I told Mommy that she should have bought you a baby."

"Leila!" Relena laughed. "Talking about presents was supposed to be a secret!"

As Leila clapped her hands and laughed, Wufei slid his arm around Relena's shoulders, pulling her close to whisper into her ear.

"I like that idea. A baby boy?"

She flushed a little and hit his stomach lightly before hugging him. "Can't buy babies," she whispered into his ear. "Surely you know that?"

"We'll make one," he promised. "Another beautiful one, just like Leila."

"Baba, I want my milk, please."

Wufei kissed Leila's forehead and set her onto the floor so she could go sit at the table. Relena joined her, watching as Wufei poured a cup of milk for Leila. She imagined a small version of Wufei in the household and a small smile crossed her lips. Catching her eye, Wufei winked at her, and Relena knew that Wufei would not mind having another child.

She looked at the pendant lying over his tie. Wufei sat down and tucked it under his shirt.

"Always close to my heart," he said softly.

They would welcome another child if one where to come along, but for now, Relena knew that she and Wufei were happy with their family just the way it was.
