Cookie Monster

The first time he met Duo Maxwell, he'd almost run him over.

He'd gone to the store to pick up a loaf of bread and was riding home on his bike when a large blue ball rolled from a driveway across the sidewalk. Chasing after the ball was a small boy with long hair tied back into a braid.

In that split second, Heero squeezed the brakes on his bike and planted a foot down on the cement, swinging his bicycle neatly to avoid running the boy over. There was a screech of rubber, and Heero hoped the tail of his bicycle wouldn't hit the boy.

It didn't, but Duo Maxwell still fell onto his butt, ball in his hands, eyes wide and staring up at Heero.

"Are you..."

"Cool!" the boy on the ground exclaimed. "How did you do that? I saw that on TV once but I never managed it!"

Heero blinked at the boy who was still sitting on the sidewalk. "Are you all right?" he finally asked.

"Yeah." The boy got up. "Can you teach me that? What's your name? I haven't seen you here before. Did you just move here? How old are you?"

Heero furrowed his eyebrows. "I...My name is Heero Yuy. I moved into the house at the end of this street five days ago. I'm ten years old."

"I'm Duo Maxwell and I'm seven! I've lived here all my life!"

"Duo, the cookies are ready!" a woman's voice called from the window, and both boys turned to look at the porch. "Oh! Who's you're friend? Come on in for some cookies, dear."

"Mom! This is Heero! He moved into that empty house at the end of the street five days ago!"

"That's nice, sweetheart. Would you like to come in for the cookies, Heero? Or I can bring a couple out to you to bring home."

"I wouldn't want to be a bother, ma'am," he said.

"Of course not! Just wait here, I'll be back in a moment."

"Mom makes the best cookies!" Duo said. "So can you teach me?"

"Do you have a bike?" Heero asked. "I can teach you. It'll be a fair trade for the cookies."

Heero smiled fondly at the memory. Duo's parents had purchased him a slightly larger bicycle, knowing that Duo would grow quickly. He'd been too short to put his foot flat onto the ground and that had made it hard for him to try to execute the 'neat stopping trick' as Duo had dubbed the quick braking manoeuvre. It hadn't stopped Duo from trying to do it, even though he fell twice in his earlier attempts.

"What are you smiling at?" Duo asked, settling onto the couch next to him.

"The neat stopping trick," Heero said, pulling Duo into his embrace. "Ready to go to work?" he asked, noticing Duo's uniform.

"Yeah," Duo replied. "I can't believe I agreed to take this shift for Trowa, but I guess the extra money is good. And he promised to return the favour if I ever wanted to take a shift off to spend the day with you." He leaned against Heero. "Speaking of that neat stopping trick, I pulled it in front of a small boy who came running across his lawn. He fell anyway and stared up at me."

"Did he tell you that you were cool?" Heero teased.

"Yea, he did," Duo chuckled. "Now I know what you saw that day twelve years ago. And I wish 'cool' wasn't the first thing I said to you. I wouldn't have if I'd known you were going to be my future boyfriend."

Heero pushed Duo down, pressing him onto the sofa. "What? Am I not cool?"

Duo squirmed until he could wrap his arms around Heero. "Actually, I prefer you hot," he said. "Hot and bothered," he amended in a low voice. "Unfortunately, I have to go. You may have graduated college and gotten a decent job, but I still need to pay off my tuition for the next two years. Good thing I like riding my bike or I wouldn't have landed this job."

Heero snuck a kiss before sitting up. "Well, delivery boy with the neat stopping trick, hurry and go to work. I'll be home waiting for you, hot and bothered."

"Tease," Duo muttered, standing and adjusting his shirt. "By the way, Mom stopped by earlier. She brought those cookies that you love." He put his shoes on and turned back to Heero, eyebrow raised. "Sometimes, I wonder if you love me, or the cookies that my mom makes."

"You and the cookies," Heero said. "I'll try not to eat them all before you get home."

Duo snorted. "Knock yourself out. Mom gave us separate boxes and I've already hidden mine away."

"Sharing is caring, Duo," Heero retorted.

"Says you, cookie monster." Duo carefully straightened his bike from the wall and opened the apartment door. "See you in a few hours, Heero."

"Be careful out there."

As he watched Duo wheel the bicycle out and closed the door after him, Heero leaned against the door with a sigh. Becoming friends with Duo twelve years ago had been easy enough and Heero didn't think he'd ever regret it. He smiled, walking to the kitchen to find the box of cookies on the table. Opening it, he picked one up, breathing in the delicious scent before taking a bite.

Mrs. Maxwell was probably a catalyst to his and Duo's close friendship. After all, a large part of why he'd kept going back to Duo's house, even when his new classmates teased him for hanging out with 'a baby', was because of Mrs. Maxwell's cookies.

But, Heero thought as he savoured the treat, he'd never admit that to Duo.
