Anniversaries

What did one do to celebrate anniversaries?

Heero had slowly learned the answer as the years passed, one by one, and he'd learned to celebrate them with his lover.

The first year they'd been together, Heero hadn't known if Duo had made a note of the day. He'd purchased a card for Duo, and learned that Duo had cooked up a gourmet meal for him. It didn't take long for Heero to learn that the anniversary gift served simply to demonstrate their love for each other in any way they wanted.

Their second anniversary, Heero had decided to cook the gourmet meal for Duo, only to learn that Duo had managed to purchase tickets to a concert that Heero had wanted to attend.

Their third anniversary, Heero tried to be a little different and got tickets to a show Duo wanted to see...out of town in Las Vegas along with a few nights stay. Duo had shown his happiness for that gift by offering himself to Heero, baring his body in a strip tease for his lover. As Duo lay on his chest after their round of love making, Heero had spent a long time tracing the new tattoo on Duo's left shoulder blade that had been Duo's gift to Heero: the infinity sign inside a heart, flanked by a feathered wing to the right and Deathscythe's wing to the left.

On their fourth anniversary, Heero had given Duo a framed certificate to a star he'd purchased and named after his lover. Duo immediately took the certificate out of its expensive frame and slid it into the next blank page of the scrapbook of their lives that he'd compiled for Heero.

Their last anniversary, they'd coordinated together and made a deck together. That night, Heero had offered, for the first time in their relationship, his body to his lover. He'd clutched Duo to himself as his lover brought him to new heights, their tears mingling together; Duo, for Heero's complete trust in him, and Heero for the most intimate caress from his lover that he had craved for so long.

Now, Heero lay next to Duo, watching his lover sleep and wondering if Duo would love the anniversary he'd planned. Duo shifted and rubbed his nose against his pillow before blinking his eyes open, immediately seeking Heero's eyes.

"Hey," he murmured.

"Hey yourself," Heero answered, leaning down for a kiss. "Ready to get up?"

"Mm, which up?" Duo asked, rolling onto his side to press against Heero. Their arousals met and Duo chuckled. "Never mind, we're both on the same wavelength.

Heero caressed Duo's side and kissed his lover again. They remained silent, bodies pressing together in a familiar manner until their sated sighs echoed each other's, lips seeking each other before Duo tucked his head under Heero's chin.

Heero fingered Duo's hair and kissed the top of his head. "Happy sixth anniversary, Duo."

"Happy anniversary to you too." Duo kissed Heero's pulse before reaching behind to grope in the drawer of his bedside table. "I have something here for you." He tossed something onto the bed and Heero picked it up.

"Lube?"

"No," Duo chuckled. "But that's for later use." He pulled his arm back and offered a box to Heero. "Here."

Heero grunted as he shifted himself so that he could hold Duo and still use both hands to unwrap the present. He blinked when he saw a key chain, on which dangled a decorative key. An amethyst stone decorated the silver key.

"You've got the key to my heart," Duo whispered.

Heero reached under his pillow and brought out a box for Duo. Duo unwrapped it to see a similar key, only instead of an amethyst stone, a cobalt one was in place.

"You've got the key to mine," Heero answered.

Duo chuckled. "Definitely on the same wavelength." He lifted the key and pressed a kiss to the cobalt stone. "So, you know the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, right?"

Heero nuzzled his lover and poked his stomach with the key. "Yes," he answered before extracting himself and getting up, stretching in all his naked glory. Duo felt his blood stir at the sight. "So, while I go cook your favorite breakfast," he offered a smirk. "You can change the sheets."

Duo jumped out of bed. "Hey, I changed them yesterday, it's your turn!" He wrestled Heero for a moment, trying to pull his lover back towards the bed.

"But I've got to make my way to your heart through your stomach and your breakfast won't cook itself," Heero reasoned.

"Well, I've got to make my way to my man's heart too, you know." Duo didn't hesitate to grope Heero, causing the man to gasp in surprise and shoot Duo a dirty look. "Yes, definitely a man."

Heero turned them around and pressed Duo against the wall, holding him in place with his own body. "Well, no one ever specified what sort of hunger one had to satisfy to reach a man's heart." He rubbed himself against Duo, drawing a moan from the man before Duo's hand slipped into Heero's hair, their other hands and the keys tangling together in another grasp.

"You're well on your way," Duo commented, tugging Heero's head back by the hair. They searched each other's eyes for a long moment. "I love you, you know?" Duo murmured.

Heero shifted, letting his hand drop from Duo's hips to his thigh, pulling it up around his own hip before he shifted and rubbed himself intimately against Duo. "I love you too," he breathed.

They never mentioned their mutual gifts to any of their friends and the two keys remained linked together, hanging from the top of the full-length mirror in their bedroom.

They had gone through simple and more extravagant gifts in their past anniversaries, but the symbolism of the keys; the key to each other's heart locked together, served to visually remind them just what place they held in each other's hearts.
