Hogwarts Part 1
The Braided Baka

The fire had been extinguished. The revolution that was to have been started by Mariemeia died with its true instigator... Dekim Barton. That isn't to say all of life's little problems were solved. Especially not for one Duo Maxwell.

Now that the war was over, and the Gundams were all bits of scrap, Duo no longer had to be the manic God of Death who cackled during battle. He was now... well... without a job. Not that he minded all that much. Fact being, he relished drifting from colony to colony whenever he could stow away on a ship. A part of him was glad to be on the street stealing his daily bread or the daily bread of some other war orphan. No one knew where he was, and that's just the way he liked it.

Which is why he was surprised to get a letter addressed to him. At first, he tore the envelope open with a bit of dread. After all... there could be countless people who wanted him dead. A few tickets fell into his lap, and he ignored them. He chose, instead, to read the letter.

Duo blinked and read the letter twice more. "Oh no way!" He read through the list and shook his head. He would believe himself a lot of things, but a wizard was not one of those things. He debated tossing the letter and the tickets until he saw both the shuttle and the plane tickets had the words 'First Class' on them.

"Well... if this is all a load of bull, at least they're doing it in style. Never had First Class accommodations before." Duo grinned at the prospect and shouldered his pack. "It was time to move along anyway." With that, he headed for the shuttle area.

*****

Although the accommodations were first class, Duo was unimpressed with the flying. Still... he couldn't really complain, even though his piloting days were over. Not wanting to be recognized, he tucked his braid under his white T-shirt and headed for the arrival area where his guide would be waiting. 'Can't be someone who will stand out in a crowd, so it's probably not a dragon.' He quirked a grin at the mental image of a huge scaly beast in the airport. It took all his willpower not to laugh outright as he imagined security trying to ask it to go in the back for questioning.

He let out a snicker as he sat down and watched the people milling around. It took him twenty minutes to spot the person who was, more than likely, his guide. He couldn't tell the gender due to the fact that the person had his or her back to Duo. He couldn't see the hair due to the hat the person wore. All he could see was the person was petite and slender. Probably his age. With a shrug, Duo decided to get it over with and find out if this 'Wizard' stuff was all a bunch of hooey. He approached the person and tapped the shoulder. "Sorry if I'm wrong, but are you my guide?"

The figure froze as if in shock. It was a good five seconds before the person turned to face Duo.

Duo blinked and bit his lower lip to keep his mouth from falling open. The youth had fair skin and pale blonde hair. That was common enough, but the youth also had a most unique pair of aquamarine blue eyes. Duo couldn't keep himself from smiling as he hugged the person. "Well I'll be... QUATRE!!!"

Quatre let out a laugh as he hugged Duo back. He was overjoyed that he was seeing a familiar face after the sea of strangers. "Duo! How have you been? We lost track of you and couldn't contact you. I was worried that something might have happened!"

Duo shrugged. "Ehh... been travelling. So what's all this about? Is it for real, or is it just a unique way of getting me to come here?" Quatre shook his head. "It's real, Duo. I know just how you feel, though. When one of my sisters mentioned it to me, I thought they were kidding. Then Iria... she's the doctor... told me something I never expected to hear. Oh! Let me help you with that." Quatre took Duo's pack and frowned. "Is this all you have?"

Duo shrugged and nodded. "Can't afford to have too much when you're on the road. Now... what did your sister tell you?"

Quatre shook his head as he headed for the parking lot. "She told me that not only was I the only son... I was also the only one of my father's children not born from a test tube. I almost fainted at that bit of news. Then she went on to say that the only reason my mother was able to bear me was because she was a witch... and a powerful healer." He smiled sadly. "Using her powers to keep me safe, she drained herself. That would have been all right, but there were complications during my birth that caused her to over extend herself. She died a moment after I was born. The headmaster of Hogwarts sent my father a letter of condolences. For the past few weeks, I've been getting to know my family on my mother's side. My space heart is actually an unconscious spell for wanting to know how my friends are."

Duo followed Quatre to the top level of the parking lot. "Don't you have to meet anyone else?"

Quatre shook his head. "No... they only told me to wait for one person. I guess any others have guides meeting them at various other airports." He stopped and nodded when he came to a small white car with a license plate reading WINWIZ. "Well... get in! I promise to drive carefully!" As soon as Duo was in the car, Quatre gunned the engine and drove out of the airport parking garage.

*****

Quatre grinned at Duo as they got close to a town.

Duo frowned. He knew that 'I know something you don't know' smile that Quatre was wearing. "Okay. What's with that grin?"

Quatre turned and blinked innocently at Duo. "Grin? Oh! Nothing. You'll see! You have your list, right? So... what kind of animal do you want?" He smiled. "I have an owl. It's common name is the Pharoh Eagle Owl or the Desert Eagle Owl. I was tempted to call it Sandrock, but I changed my mind and named it Sultan. Owls bring mail."

Duo snorted at that. "Quatre... who would send me mail?" He looked at his choices and smiled. "I'd rather have a cat. A lovely sleek black cat with one green eye and one blue eye. A true witch's cat, and its name will be Shinigami."

Quatre frowned at that. "Duo... there is a LOT of mythology running around. Don't believe everything you've read. Truth is, most wizards and witches prefer owls."

Duo shrugged. "Still... I want a cat. I've ALWAYS wanted a cat."

Quatre nodded. "All right. We'll go to Gringotts first. Unless you want to meet your aunt."

Duo stared hard at Quatre. "My AUNT? I have an aunt?"

Quatre nodded. "Yup. Nice lady, too. Your mother was her sister. Your parents were on their way to the main Hogwarts campus here, on Earth, when their shuttle was downed. Apparently, when the little 'disruption' became a war, a recall was sent out to all wizards and witches to return to the Hogwarts on Earth. The school has been closed off until early this summer. Had the campus been open, I would have been attending years ago, and so would you. You're not listening to a word I'm saying, are you?" Quatre patted Duo's arm. "Your aunt's home first. You've had a few shocks today. I think you could use a nice cup of catnip tea to calm your nerves."

Duo frowned at that. "Quatre... I HATE catnip tea!"
