Crimson Ties Sidefic - Special and Dear

Duo hummed a cheery tune to himself as he walked the first floor hallways of the large home he and his Vampire shared. A smile on his face and a fresh pair of bite marks on his neck, the hybrid silently wondered how his existence could get any more perfect. He had the love of his life and a large family surrounding them that he adored. Those things alone had been more than worth the struggles that it had taken to bring him to the place where he was now.

Stepping out onto the large back patio of his grand estate, the braided Companion sighed in content as he watched the breathtaking sunset that had begun. From his spot in the side of a tall Switzerland mountain, there were few more spectacular views that Maxwell had ever taken in. Chuckling when a familiar pair of strong arms wrapped around him from behind, the violet-and-silver-eyed immortal smirked, "Hi, love. Finally recovered?"

A snort filled his ear and a kiss fell softly over his bite marks. "Shinigami is quite... enthusiastic in bed when he decides to play along," Heero chuckled deeply.

"Yea," Duo agreed with a sheepish smile as he ducked his head. Turning his head, he appraised the side of his Vampire's neck. "Sorry about that," he snickered before he quickly kissed the remnants of his alter ego's love nip.

With a shrug, Yuy tightened his hold around his Companion and smiled sincerely, "I am not complaining in the slightest." Just when the Original seemed about to move in to claim his lover's lips with his own, he paused in spotting something move beyond the corner of his eye. Frowning deeply when he caught a clear view of what was zipping from the tree line ahead of them, he muttered in confusion, "Solo?"

Quickly following his soul mate's gaze, Duo blinked in surprise at the sight of their nephew materializing at the bottom of their porch steps. The five-year-old had to brush back the longer ends of his shaggy red hair that had fallen in his silver-and-blue eyes when he looked up at his uncles. "Hey, buddy." the hybrid smiled, "What are you doing here? Did your family wrap up your hunt early?"

Shaking his head enthusiastically, the child Vampire answered, "Naw, I went on my own 'cuz I need ta hunt for da stork."

The moment Solo mentioned running off on his own, the Original and the Companion tensed in worry. Wufei and Anna would never have allowed the tike to leave their sights if they could have helped it. So this was a cleverly crafted getaway. Wherever they were, they were no doubt searching anxiously for their youngest. Doing his best to not show how unsettled he was, Duo kept his smile intact as he asked, "You're hunting a stork?"

His head nodding, the boy responded, "Yea. Momma and Daddy said da stork is gonna be bringin' another baby to da family. I gotta kill it before dat happens 'cuz I don't wanna brother or sister. I wanna stay the baby or Momma 'n Daddy won' love me as much." Gazing around, he inquired, "Did you see da stork around?"

Realization flooding their expressions, his uncles relaxed only slightly. "I got this," Maxwell reassured his lover as their gazes met, "You get to Anna and Wufei before they worry themselves sick looking for him."

Already set to the task, Heero whispered back, "Right." With a quick kiss to his partner's temple, the Vampire disappeared in a blur of himself that shot through the stretch of trees.

Sitting on the top step of their patio, Duo patted the space beside him, urging, "Come on up here, buddy." Obediently, Solo hopped the staircase and seated himself beside the braided hybrid that made his existence possible. Wrapping an arm around his nephew's little shoulders, the Companion pulled him against his side as he questioned, "Now what on earth makes you think that your Mom or Dad would ever love you less than they do now?"

"Well," the little Vampire began, quickly pausing to frown in consideration of his words. "I won't be special no more if I'm not the baby," he declared, staring up into the silver-and-violet eyes watching him with a imploring gaze that begged to be understood.

'Ah,' Maxwell thought to himself with a small smile. 'There is it.' Pulling the little Vampire closer, he said softly, "You know, before you came along, your big brothers and sisters were all the babies at one point. And maybe there may have been a slight difference in the amount of attention that they were shown since they were able to take care of themselves by the time the next newborns came along because they needed the extra care, but I can tell you that not once did your Mom or Dad love them any less."

Solo blinked widely, hanging on every word with rapt attention. "Now, do you really think that your parents could ever see you as anything but special, pal?" the hybrid asked, raising an eyebrow. Biting his frowning lip, the child's eyes misted over. After a moment's consideration, he shook his head. Winking, his uncle chuckled, "Good answer."

Taking a deep breath, Duo shared, "You know, growing up, I always wished that I'd had brothers and sisters of my own and finally got my wish when I met Wufei and Anna. They took me in and treated me like a brother right from the start." Feeling his emotions catching up when he thought back to that unconditional acceptance that his blood siblings had shown him back in those darker days, he cleared his throat and fought the start of a sting in his eyes.

"But you don't realize how lucky you are that you won't be the baby anymore," the hybrid commented. To the confused expression he earned with that sentiment, he smirked, "Your new brothers and sisters will all look up to you because you'll be bigger than them. Think of how much you count on Isabelle, Charles, Carol and John. Now you'll be one of the bigger kids to help out the others that come after you."

Instantly brightening, Solo gasped, "Yea! I will be bigger than them!" Nodding, he cheered excitedly, "I'm gonna be a great big brother!"

Snickering as he mussed his nephew's head of shaggy hair, Maxwell replied, "That you will be, buddy." He folded his arms across his chest, grinning, "So... still want to go off hunting that stork down?"

Not hesitating for a moment, the boy shook his head vehemently, "No. I wanna have little brothers 'n sisters, Uncle Duo."

A wide smile returning to his face, the Companion gave a firm nod as he chuckled, "Good." When he looked up at the flicker of movement from the corner of his eye, he focused on the oncoming blur just before Heero, Wufei and Anna materialized at the bottom of the steps. Relief flooded over his scaly brother and his redheaded sister as their gazes fixed onto their little boy, their bodies sagging heavily with deep sighs.

Only just in the early stages of showing, the Irish Infected whimpered, "Solo." Closing the distance between her and her child in a blink, she knelt one step below him to pull him into a fierce hug. Her reddened eyes watered again even as her little one clung on just as fiercely. "You scared the existence out of me and your father," she breathed. Chang was at their sides to rest a hand on her shoulder and the other on their runaway's head.

All of a sudden, the reality of what he had caused by going on his own struck their son and he trembled in guilt. "'m so sorry, Mama, Daddy," he wailed as sharp tears filled his eyes. "I... I..."

"Uncle Heero told us what you were up to when he found us," Wufei smiled sadly. Duo quickly rose to his feet to make room on the top step for the Chinese immortal to sit in his place beside the youngster. Drawing a deep breath, he gently took hold of his boy's chin to bring their faces to meet and sighed, "How many Solos do you think your mother and I have? You are the only one in the whole world and you are ours."

Anna kissed the top of their son's head and rested her hands on his small shoulders. Once their gold-ringed eyes locked again, she told him firmly, "It does not matter how many visits we might have from the stork from this day on. And we don't care how big you might get in time. You're always going to be our little man... special and dear to us always. We love you. You know that, right?" She smiled when her child nodded, his pug nose scrunching with a sniffle.

Biting his lip, Solo shifted his attention from one face to the other as he whispered earnestly, "'M really sorry I scared you, Mama and Daddy. I wanna have more brothers and sisters now. I'm gonna help take care of 'em."

Chang patted his son's shoulder, grinning lovingly, "You are forgiven. And we won't have a thing to worry about thanks to you giving us a hand with the babies coming." Kissing the top of the little Infected's head, he suggested, "Now, let's get back home and catch up with the rest of the family."

The redheaded mother opened her arms to scoop Solo into them while he looped his arms around her neck. Straightening herself onto her feet, Anna descended the steps where Heero remained. Carefully shifting her charge to free an arm, she wrapped it tight around her creator in a fierce hug. "Thank you, big brother," she managed. "Sometimes I wonder what I would ever do without you." Laughing quietly, Yuy returned the tight embrace and kissed the Siren's cheek.

Blinking his enlarged eyes, the boy in her care exchanged a look with his Uncle Duo. A smug grin on his face, the Companion winked and nodded, knowing the impact that the exchange had on his nephew in guaranteeing how much he looked forward to becoming a big brother. Climbing down the stairs to join the Vampires, he pecked cheeks with Anna and shared a firm handshake with Wufei before the scaly Infected looped an arm around his wife's shoulders and led them back to their estate.

"Crisis averted," Heero smirked to his lover. nudging the braided hybrid, he complimented, "Nicely handled, Uncle Duo."

Maxwell grinned back, "Same to you, Uncle Heero." Staring off after their loved ones, he sighed and leaned against the creature hugging him from the side. "Have you ever thought of asking Anna is she might be a surrogate mother so that we could have our own kids some day?" he asked after a long moment of thought.

Humming, the Original answered softly, "I might have given that some consideration from time to time." Gently resting the side of his head against the one pillowed against his shoulder, he admitted, "I would really love to have children with you..." Both relieved and surprised by the response, Duo lifted his head to blink at his eternity-long partner. Smiles curling their lips, they laughed simultaneously, "In a few decades."

Snickering, they linked hands and headed back into the safety and comfort of their home... surrounded once again by the love and warmth of their family.
