Sort of Like Ladyhawke, Only Less So
He had made a deal with the Devil for me, and what could I do but love him for it?
"Heero."
I could hear him calling for me.
I clawed faster at the dirt that separated us.
It was just one sliver of time, at twilight, between sunset and full night. That was the only time we had together, to talk, to touch, to taste, to feel.
I broke through the earth and his hand grasped mine.
He pulled and tugged with all his might until we were both sprawled, panting, on the plush, green grass of Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Whole.
Solid.
Alive.
He had aged a bit, but I knew I looked not a day older than twenty-two, when I was young, and strong, and beautiful, and when I was killed in the line of duty.
He grabbed my face in both his hands and he kissed me, fiercely, so deeply. It was like I was drowning in him, like he was pouring all of himself into me. In a way, I suppose, he was.
I kissed him back as if I hadn't seen him just last night, at this time, and done the exact same thing that we were doing now.
I kissed him like I hadn't seen him for an age.
I kissed him like I was never going to see him again.
Sometimes we lay in the dirt and made love until... until our all-too-brief time was over.
Sometimes we talked, so casually, as if we were at home, as if we had just finished dinner and were lazing in the living room.
Sometimes we just kissed and cried.
Salty and sweet.
But when the sky darkened from the silvery, magical twilight to that dark, deeper than navy hue, I would stand up to walk the night while Duo lay down in my stead.
