Free to a Good Home

Duo found the boy sitting at the side of the road, looking a little worse for wear. His dark brown hair was messy, long bangs hanging in his eyes, and his smooth, round cheeks were smudged with dirt. His once-white tanktop hung loose on his thin frame and his weathered pants were torn off at the knees. The kid wore no shoes and his feet were an unsightly mess. But despite the unkempt appearance, Duo pulled his car over and opened the passenger side door.

Without any hesitation at all, the boy climbed in.

"For future reference, you should be careful whose car you get into," Duo said casually.

The boy smiled crookedly but did not respond.

"I could've been a monster or some kind of minor demon," Duo continued.

"But you're not, right?"

The boy's voice was soft and a little deeper than Duo would have thought. His eyes were bluer than ordinarily seen among the mortals on Earth.

Duo smiled.

They stood shoulder-to-shoulder as they waited for the elevator at Duo's apartment building, and Duo realized that the kid was bigger than he'd expected, probably the same size as Duo himself. He peeked at the boy's back and gauged the size of the wings sprouting from bony shoulder blades, barely visible as they shimmered between this plane of existence and the Other.

The kid was almost full grown.

Duo grinned.

The doors to the elevator opened and Duo gestured for the kid to precede him. As he passed, Duo noticed that one of the barely-there wings was trailing on the ground behind him, clearly broken. He held out his hand and discreetly ran his fingers along shadow of the shattered wing. He could almost feel the feathers tickling his palm.

He didn't miss the slight shudder that ran down the kid's spine and he wondered if the kid knew that he could See.

Duo took the kid straight to the bathroom when they entered his penthouse suite. He showed him how to work the shower and laid out on the counter all the human medical supplies that he had stocked the place with back when he was still interested in keeping up appearances. The kid picked up the bandages and then put them back down. He smiled sadly at Duo and thanked him for his concern.

When the kid was finished cleaning up, Duo met him with a glass of warm honeyed milk. They stood at the huge windows that made up one full wall of the living room and Duo watched as the kid downed the milk eagerly. He found himself unconsciously running a hand down where the kid's wings would be if they had been at Home.

"My name is Heero," the kid said, after the last of the drink was gone.

"Duo."

They stood in silence for a minute, watching the city below from their vantage point, fifty-seven stories up.

"I like living up here. Makes me feel like I'm close to Heaven."

Heero smiled that small, sad smile again.

"Yes. Close. But not quite."

Duo inclined his head slightly, acknowledging both what Heero said and what he was implying.

There was silence again as the sun kissed the horizon and their view was suddenly flooded with a soft rosy-gold glow.

"You have what I need."

Duo nodded and he knew that Heero could see his motions now reflected in the window, could see that he was still petting the echo of his wings.

"You won't give it to me." There was no censure in Heero's tone.

"I could mend your broken wing so you could fly again, yes."

Duo slid his hand up Heero's back, tracing his spine, trailing up the nape of his neck until he had his fingers buried in Heero's still damp hair. He pulled Heero's head back until those pretty, cherry red lips parted. Then he leaned in and kissed him.

"But you can't go back to Heaven now, Heero."

Duo kissed him again, deeper.

"You shouldn't get into cars with major demons either, my fallen angel."
