Silence Part 15

Wufei

I shoved Duo into a cab and hit the speed dial on my phone. "We lost," I said when it picked up.

"Copy that," came the immediate reply.

I hung up and dialed again.

"Hai."

"Lock and load."

"Hai."

I hung up again. Through both calls, Duo leaned against me, hugging himself, his lips moving silently, probably in prayer. He still had that deer-in-the-headlights look. I wrapped my arms around him and he rested his head on my shoulder.

"Listen to me, angel," I whispered in his ear. I only had a few minutes; I would have to be quick. "I promised to take care of you and to see that no one took Heero away from you. I'm going to do my best to keep those promises." He looked up at me, his eyes wet. "Baby, we're going to get Heero out of there right now, before they can do anything. We have a mission, Duo," I said sternly and his frightened and agonized expression began to change as my words sank in.

"Wufei," he breathed in astonishment. "You... we... We're going to kidnap Heero?!" His hand went to his mouth, as if afraid of someone overhearing.

"You bet your sweet ass we are! And Solo, too. Why do you think I hired Angelique and Ming? If we don't meet them in thirty minutes, they're on a shuttle to Earth with your son. Solo is not going to be swallowed up by the System."

"Oh, my God..." He hugged me tightly. "Oh, my God! Wufei... I love you!"

It wasn't meant the way I dreamed of, but those simple words, directed at me, had the effect of momentarily closing my throat. And then he broke away to look into my eyes, grinning from ear to ear. Oh, wonderful sight, so beautiful!

Eyes sparkling in a way I hadn't seen in months, he grabbed my face in his hands and kissed me. Hard. Deep. For a very long time...

At some point my brain disengaged and allowed my instincts to simply enjoy.

"Wufei... I love you..." he murmured finally. "If Heero --"

I blinked, wrenching myself from the depths of ignominious depravity. What the hell was I thinking?!

I shushed him with two fingers against his lips, and shook my head, my civilized consciousness once more in control. "You're my best friends; I want you both happy." He nodded silently and I breathed easier. Frightening, those two words. I did not want to hear those words; not now, not ever. Heero was not going to die.

Rowan and Mei Ling were waiting when we arrived at Duo's "private" entrance. I gave them brief instructions and we slipped inside.

We moved quickly, but confidently, as if we had every right to be there. Duo and Rowan went into the room, Mei Ling and I stood watch. A faint thump and a whispering female voice reached me. I nodded to myself.

Duo would pull the monitors, and then he and Rowan would go out the window with Heero. After giving Marissa a light, fake knock on the head so that she could feign unconsciousness.

Five minutes, at the most.

Mei Ling hissed at me. A staff member had stopped to peer at me curiously.

"Don't I know..." she began, then gasped. "You're the one! You're not supposed to be here! Security!" She started to turn and Mei Ling grabbed her, a hand over her mouth.

K'so! Murphy's Law in action.

I jumped into the room. "Duo! We're busted! Go now!"

"Wufei!" yelled Mei Ling. I looked out. A flock of security, doctors, orderlies and suits flew down the hall toward us. Mei Ling waited until the last possible moment, then shoved the woman into the approaching hoard and ducked into the room.

Of course, there were no locks on the door.

For a bare instant, my confidence, my faith, my honor and my dignity slammed bottom. Mission failed. Damn it! Why couldn't I have Quatre's strategy skills or Heero's ability to see obstacles before they appeared?
