Silence Part 14
Justice

Duo

Hi, my love... I go to court in three days. I don't know what's gonna happen. Maggie thinks we have a good chance. I don't know... It's... it's getting harder and harder for me to feel optimistic. It seems like every time things look better, something awful happens to ruin it. I can't see you alone anymore... That's why I'm whispering. There's a bloody great security guard sitting by the door. They won't allow Solo in, or Wufei. They're searching me at the entrance. God forbid I should have any contraband on me, like Oh! Horrors! Chocolate!

Marissa caught me outside last time and told me how snide and shitty they're being to her. They can't fire her, but they're searching her and making remarks about how she'll be out of a job soon. They don't even seem to care that she hears them. She's a nice lady, Heero. Dammit! This place has the best reputation in the colony! How can they fuck with people this way?!

I shouldn't've waited; we should have bailed when we had the chance... I just... Heero, I'm sorry; I just never expected Quatre and Trowa to turn on us this way... In my most hideous nightmares, I never thought they would ever...

Ah, shit... My time's up... I love you... I'll be back tomorrow... I love you so much...

Heero

I will peel the flesh from their bodies. I will disembowel them both with a dull spoon. I will grate their skin and tenderize them with salt. No, I'll start with Trowa. Quatre can feel it all then, exactly like I feel every tear that Duo sheds.

Or should I let them try to justify their actions, and then just kill them quickly? Decisions, decisions...

Before I can do anything, I have to be free of this place. I have to be conscious, ambulatory... Armed.

Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!

When am I going to be free?!

I'm ready now! I'm ready!!! Let me go! Please, let me go back to him...

Wufei

Duo's lawyer, Ms. Liu, is filled with confidence. I am not. She is young and idealistic and still believes that justice is to be found in the law and the courts. She will learn, as she grows more familiar with her chosen profession.

Duo has been restrained from seeing Heero alone. A security guard sits inside Heero's room at all times. Anyone who enters his room, aside from the facility staff, is searched. Even his private nurse is searched because she was hired by Duo.

I am not permitted inside the building. Solo has also been barred from seeing his father. That is the cruelest twist of the blade. I am no longer dealing with other human beings. These creatures are no better than viruses.

I have now had three very strange conversations with that vark detective, Ohara. He seems uninterested in our situation ('our' situation, not 'Duo's' situation; I have recently begun to think of myself as so intimately involved in his life), and yet he asks questions that lead me to believe that something is going on that affects us.

I mentioned this to Duo and he suggested that the man must be hot for me. That does not amuse me, but as it made Duo smile, I let it pass.

He's eating again, finally. When I had to resort to nutritional supplements, I told him that my next step would be an IV and a large ugly nurse who never laughed. Solo backed me up with the most emotionally wrenching pair of shining chibi-eyes I've ever seen. I nearly cried; Duo sobbed a river. Solo presented him with some toast and he ate it.

Michael prescribed a very mild sedative and he's able to sleep again. He doesn't sleep for long, but at least he sleeps. I have insisted that he get out of bed every morning to see Solo off to school. The new staff handle the chores and keep the house in order. Hilde is running the shop quite smoothly. Duo visits Heero every day, for the twenty minutes they allow.

I wait outside for him and buy ice cream on the way home. The walk gives him time to get himself together for Solo. Sometimes he holds my hand, quivering like a child crossing a highway for the first time. Sometimes I want to hold him tight and never let him go.

Duo spends an hour each day in his workroom. He leaves the door open to ease my concerns. I don't know what he's doing. He sits inside his circle in a half lotus, head bowed and totally relaxed. It may be the only serenity he has.

I would like to have Quatre and Trowa right here, right now...

"It is my ruling that the petition for conservator of Heero Yuy be granted to Dr. Arun Leshalling, for a temporary period not to exceed 90 days. Mr. Maxwell will be required to undergo a thirty-day psychiatric observation, following which I will make my final ruling. Because Mr. Yuy is incapable at this time and Mr. Maxwell's fitness is in question, their son, Solo, will be remanded to foster care until such time as one of his parents is deemed fit to care for him."

Wufei

I don't know what I expected, curses, screams, or a drawn weapon, but I was not prepared for Duo's reaction. He did nothing. Absolutely nothing.

I swung over the railing to drop my hands on his shoulders and it was as if I clutched a statue.

I failed Duo. I broke my promise to Heero. Solo was being sucked into the System. No. My best friends. The child I love like my own. No. Not while Chang Wufei still breathes. NO!!!

"Maggie!" I snarled at the lawyer. She jumped and looked at me. Tears streaked her face.

"I don't understand, Wufei," she whispered. "This is a ridiculous ruling. I just don't..."

"Is it possible to appeal?" I demanded.

"Yes, but it could be months before it's heard..." She scrambled to her feet, grabbing at folders. "I've got to go to the law library! I'll find something!" she cried.

Duo hadn't moved a muscle. I waved her off. "Baby..." I whispered as I wrapped him in my embrace. He shuddered then, and sagged against me.

"Heero..." he whimpered. "They can't... Oh, Wufei..."

"Let's get out of this place." I had contingency plans; apparently, I would have to use them.

TBC...
