Blue Forest Banshee Diversions Part 14
Dragons and Their Kin

Q handed me the frozen coffee drink and sat down across from me.

"Now, Duo; what would you like to ask me?"

I would love to know how he does that, but I don't think he'll actually tell me, so I asked the question that I'd been afraid to ask Heero. Namely, why did Heero have to have children for his Clan when Wufei doesn't?

The Wizard smirked at me from behind his latte. "Ah, one of the great rivalries of our times," he said. "Let me explain to you..."

The difference between Heero and Wufei

(As described by Q)

The Great Dragons came from the heavens to bring knowledge and learning to Human-kind -- after giving it first to the Magical Races, of course.

Some of the Great Dragons became fond of various Human and Magical creatures, and so begat the races of Were-Dragons and Wyverns. Were-Dragons were born of the matings of the Great Dragons with Humans. Wyverns were born of similar matings between Great Dragons and the various Elves and Sprites. Both are held as kin to the Great Dragons and both are jealous of their ties to the Great Dragons.

This has led to a certain rivalry between the two races; sometimes acrimonious, oft-times childish displays of "they like me better."

In order that the Were-Dragons and Wyverns may retain their strength, the Great Dragons visit each Clan periodically to refresh the Dragon-spirit by mating with suitable families within the Clan.

It is an honor of the highest order to be chosen to mate with a Great Dragon, and those born of such matings are looked upon proudly and with much bragging among the family.

Among the families of his Clan, Wufei's family has been chosen for this honor more often than the rest. This is the source of their importance as well as their irritation with Wufei. It is not enough that his two brothers and three sisters have continued the line; he is expected to add to that dominance. That he chooses not to is an embarrassment to his entire family.

Wufei has chosen to sit out the game.

Wyvern Clans are not so rigidly structured. Families within a Clan are more loosely defined, and there is more outbreeding with other Clans, as well as with Human and other Magical Races. It is considered an honor to the entire Clan, not just a single family, to be chosen by a Great Dragon. Rivalry is between Clans, with the contest over how recent the Great Dragons' visit.

This is why it is considered a duty to the Clan to pass on one's genes by producing at least one offspring. Once this Clan duty is accomplished, one may choose a life mate and have children with them, or not.

Heero's line has been particularly appealing to the Great Dragons. His great-great-grandfather was the child of a Dragon, as were his grandmother and his mother. The IchiBan had taken duty to her Clan firmly to heart, and had produced three children, all sired by Great Dragons. And each of those children had passed on the blood of the Great Dragons in approved fashion, before turning to love and the choosing of a life mate.

So too, eventually, had Heero chosen to sire two children with a cousin who also carried strong Dragon genes. The cousin has recently announced that she might have found a suitable life mate. Heero has met with and approved of her choice, even though it means that she would be leaving her Clan for her new mate's.

Heero does not object. Kiba is a strong honorable male with a fine lineage of his own. Heero has no doubt that his cousin Kohaku will be happy with the amber-eyed Wyvern male, and that the children will be protected and cherished as well.

Heero has chosen to play the game and retire, undefeated.
