Verse: something good: monsters, wandering

Something Good Halloween Drabble

Heero blinked up at the shadow over his bed and pulled the covers higher. "You want to bargain now?"

"Now is as good a time as any." Of course it would be, Heero thought with a groan. Duo didn't need to sleep.

"But I don't have a job at the moment."

"I know that. You will though."

"And I don't know if I'll need your help on this future job."

The demon actually pouted. "Why not? Haven't I been useful so far?"

"Good point. Still- I've been wandering around for two weeks without finding a job." The room he was in proved it. The blankets were thin, the small heater less than warm.

"I know. I'm getting... what do you call it? Ah yes. Impatient."

"So you want me to bargain with you now for future help- and I suppose I pay you in advance?"

"Last time you were too injured to pay me right after. I had to settle for something less than I wanted. Why not pay me before and then if one of the monsters does rip out your throat you won't die with your debt unpaid."

The candle beside Heero's bed flickered blue for a moment. "Why do you make that sound bad?"

"Because if your soul owes me something and you die- well-" A soft chuckle. "Let's just say you won't be in a position to bargain. Even if you do know my true name."

"That's not reassuring."

"It's not meant to be."

"And what if I do pay you in advance and something happens to you?"

"Nothing will happen to me."

"You don't know that. We might run into a priest with a talent for exorcisms."

"Those only work if I'm trying to possess someone. I don't do that sort of thing." The demon made a face. "Messy and uncomfortable."

Heero bit his lip. He did need the demon's help. The vamps were getting more powerful- something was changing them and he hadn't figured out what yet.

And it couldn't hurt to have the demon indebted to him for a change... he was running out of ways to fend Duo off as it was... He knew the demon would only stick around as long as Heero was interesting...

"What do you want?"

Duo looked surprised. "You aren't going to open with an offer? Tell me you'll have something good for me maybe?"

Heero shook his head. "I think you have the advantage here. You obviously have an idea. What is it?"

"You know damn well what I want." The demon descended, his hair brushing Heero's cheek. His voice dropped, rolled over Heero's skin like a caress. "I want you. Every night."

"Every night?" Heero repeated, stunned. He'd expected once or twice...

"Every night- and in return I will hunt with you, protect you, augment your strength with mine."

"For how long?" Heero was expecting a month- maybe a year-

"Until you die."

"Until I... wait. Do you know when-"

"No." Duo leaned away, shook his head. "No, of course not. Nor will I try and hasten your death."

"So- you'll hunt with me, protect me, share your strength and not try to kill me or get me killed?"

"Yes."

Heero hadn't been expecting such an offer. It seemed too good to be true. "All of that for just letting you sleep with me?"

"Not sleep." Duo rolled his eyes. "I'm not getting caught by your tricks again."

"I'm sorry. Just a euphemism. I didn't mean..." Heero wondered what the catch was. "Can I sleep on it? It's late for me and I'd rather be clear-headed for this-"

Was Duo going to insist on an answer?

"Of course. It's a big decision." The demon smiled and curled up on the bed beside him, crooking a finger at the candle, which promptly doused itself. "Sleep all you like. I'll be here when you wake up."

Heero nearly protested, but it was late and Duo was warm. He could think about this offer after he slept...

Duo watched Heero fall asleep, then brushed his fingers through the sleeping man's hair, traced his features with a gentle touch. He spoke too softly to wake the sleeping man beside him.

"I didn't want to do it this way..."
