Stargazing
The evening was cool and clear, perfect for stargazing. Duo was sprawled haphazardly across his favorite bean bag chair on the roof, admiring the red and purple hues painted by the setting sun.
"What are you looking at?" Heero asked.
Duo was silent for a moment.
"The stars," he said softly.
"I've noticed you've been doing this a lot lately. Any reason why?"
Duo sighed, "I'll come inside soon Heero, I promise."
"You didn't answer my question." Heero observed.
"It's silly Heero," Duo demurred. "Just give me five more minutes and I'll be in."
"OK Duo." Without another word, Heero turned and left.
Duo's violet eyes scanned the skies, searching desperately for it. The minutes crawled past with agonizing slowness. Finally, in the deepening gloom, his eyes found what they were seeking.
"Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight." Duo spoke reverently. "I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight."
Duo bowed his head and wished.
"Duo?" Heero's voice was tentative.
Duo jumped, "Sorry Heero, I'll be right in."
"No need, I was merely wondering if there was room on your bean sac for me?" Heero asked.
"Bean Bag," Duo chuckled, "and yes there is plenty of space for two on it."
Duo sat up and started to scoot to one side when Heero quietly sat between his legs.
"Oh," Duo said with a startled laugh, "what can I do for you Heero?"
"I want to know what you find so fascinating about the night sky."
Duo smiled, "You are kidding me right?"
"No," Heero said leaning back against him, "I'm not kidding. You were born out there, you lost friends and mentors up there, and you have even fought and killed up there. What could possibly be so enthralling with that black void that you have spent every evening for weeks gazing up there?"
Duo sighed and placed his hands on Heero's shoulders. The other boy tensed briefly at the contact, then relaxed again and let Duo draw him closer to him. Duo slid one arm around Heero and took a deep breath.
"Have you ever sat and just looked at them? They're quite beautiful." Duo said quietly, waving his hand at the stars overhead.
"They are beautiful. Is that why you're out here?"
"Every night I come here to greet the night sky and look for the wishing star. Sister Helen said the first star in the night sky could grant wishes to the one who sees it first. Every night I try hard to be the one."
"What do you wish for night after night?"
Duo smiled, "You granted my wish tonight Heero. I've been wishing for the chance to hold you in my arms."
Heero relaxed even further into Duo's embrace and smirked, "I know Duo, you have a tendency to talk in your sleep."
