I always miss the dates, 2/1, 2/2, etc. I decided to something for 2/2, but I'm afraid my muse felt a little silly today.

So, be warned. This is kind of silly, unbetaed and the product of a deranged mind. *grin*

Mage vs. Guard Sidefic 2
Twos

Heero looked up from his desk irritated. "What?" He asked the servant who was hovering near his elbow.

"Milady sent for you! She said to come right away!"

"What happened?" Heero slammed the book closed and got to his feet. "Did the meeting go badly? I thought the council-"

"Oh no, Mage Yuy! The council ended nearly an hour ago. Milady was frustrated and so she...uh..." The servant melted under his glare.

"Was she experimenting again?" Heero demanded.

The servant nodded, shuffling her feet. "Sort of-"

Without waiting for the rest, Heero set off towards Relena's office at a fast pace. What had she been thinking this time? He moved faster when he realized that she had sent a servant and not Duo. True, he had been hoping for a peaceful afternoon, which is why he'd agreed to let Chang borrow Duo to help with Relena's guard duty during the meeting with the town council- but he'd also expected to get his guard back in one piece.

He threw open the door of Relena's office to find her seated at her desk, pale and shaken. There was a faint smell of smoke in the air. Chang stood behind her desk- but Duo was nowhere in sight.

"What happened?" Heero demanded.

"I... sort of made a mistake." Relena widened her big blue eyes at him. "I really didn't mean it. I was just so mad after the council meeting and they were so frustrating- I thought I'd try a spell I found in one of father's books. I didn't mean it to hit Duo, truly I didn't! I thought I was casting it on me, but it went wrong-" She stopped.

"And?" Heero wondered if she'd talk faster if he threatened to turn her into a frog. Then again, frogs didn't talk... damn it.

She swallowed hard. "I really am sorry Heero. The effects should wear off in a day, or so the book said..."

Okay, better. Duo wasn't dead. That was good. But what had she done to him?

"Where is he?"

"Here," Duo said from behind him- but he sounded odd. Heero turned slowly, bracing himself for the worst.

He blinked. Oh no.

"Why are there two of him?" He swung back to Relena.

"It was a doppelganger spell," she sniffed. "I was wishing there were two of me- one to send to meetings and well... I didn't mean it to work like that!"

"It's really okay," the Duos said in unison. That was why his voice had sounded odd, Heero realized. "It's kind of weird, but not bad."

"You're too kind, Duo." Relena sniffed again. "I really am sorry- the book said it didn't last longer than a day!"

Heero shook his head. Well, at least she hadn't killed him, or turned him into something horrible. "I'm going back to work." He lifted an eyebrow at Relena. "Next time you're frustrated just blow something up, okay?"

She nodded. For some reason Chang was smirking. Heero didn't want to know why. He simply left Relena's office, Duo- or rather, Duos, on his heels.

"Do you feel okay?" He asked as they headed back up to his rooms.

"Yeah, it's just kind of weird." The two men lifted a hand and wiggled the fingers. "Okay, more than kind of."

"Can the two of you move separately? Talk separately?"

One Duo shook his head. "Move yes, talk no," came from both mouths.

"I hope it does wear off," Heero opened the door to his rooms. "Otherwise we're going to have to search all of Relena's father's books for a counter spell- and the man was not known for his organization." He sat down on his couch and frowned at the two men by the door.

They smiled. "You have to look at the bright side, Heero."

"What bright side?" Heero leaned back and closed his eyes. "One guard was trouble enough, but two of you? And what if one of you starts acting independently? What effect will that have on the spell?" He huffed. "I'm buying Relena a punching bag. Better yet, I'm going to turn Chang into one."

The soft touch on his leg was his only warning. "You can't think of one good thing about there being two of me?"

Heero opened his eyes in alarm. How had they gotten over here so quickly?

"Oh no, no," he said, trying to slide away from the Duo in front of him and ending up in the arms of the other. "You can't be thinking... No. I can't keep up with one of you. Two will kill me."

"But you'll die happy."

"Duo-" Heero tried to protest, but his mouth was suddenly busy- and there was no way he could fend off four hands. Duo usually managed to get him to do things he normally wouldn't- and against two Duos... well, he was lost.

Only a day- he told himself before his brain occupied itself elsewhere. Surely he could survive a day...

The next morning, Relena was rereading the spell book when she made a faint noise of dismay.

"What is it?" Chang asked, leaning over her chair.

"I misread the spell," she said, meeting his eyes. "The doppelganger spell doesn't wear off, you have to perform the counter."

"What?" Chang blinked.

Relena nodded. "Should I send for Duo?"

Chang shook his head with a faint smile. "I'd give it a little more time, milady."

Relena hid a grin. Apparently Chang had heard some of the same things she had. "Indeed, Captain, I think you might be right. I'll let him know, oh, tomorrow sometime..."
