Football Drabble

I hung up my jacket and looked at the table in front of the TV. The top had completely vanished underneath all the trays of food on it.

"I thought you said it was just us today?" I asked, trying to hide my disappointment. Time alone with Duo was a rare thing. Usually an invite to his house included at least the other guys, if not his neighbors, other people at work, hell, people he met on the street...

"It is just us," he said as he headed for the kitchen. "Everyone else had other plans. I mean, we could've gone to the Preventers party for the day, but honestly, I knew I'd punch Jake if he made one comment about the defense again..." I heard the fridge open. "Beer? Soda?"

"Soda," I called back, knowing beer was a bad idea around Duo. Alcohol tended to make me blurt out all the stuff I usually kept well hidden- thank god he'd been just as drunk at Quatre's party last month or I'd have been dead...

"Not going to live a little?"

"I have to drive home remember?" I sat down on Duo's sofa and looked at the table again. He didn't think we'd eat all this?

"You're more than welcome to spend the night, you know that." He called back. "We're not on shift tomorrow..."

"Yeah, but I'd like to remember the game," I responded. Duo appeared in the kitchen doorway, two bottles of soda dangling from his fingers.

"One beer won't erase your memory," he rolled his eyes and joined me on the sofa.

"Why so much food?" I decided to change the subject.

Duo looked faintly sheepish. "Well, um, I got carried away... I know we can't eat it all, but I'll have leftovers for a week, right?"

I surveyed the table again. "Two weeks."

"I'll leave some of it in the break room." He settled back on the sofa and turned the volume up on the TV. The pregame was finishing up, and I curled up on my end of the sofa, ready to enjoy the next few hours of Duo's company, even if I did have to share him with a game that made no logical sense.

At that moment, the TV went black.

Duo and I both blinked at it for a minute. I realized that the apartment had gone completely silent- no whirr of the fridge, no ticking of the clocks...

Duo cursed. "Blackout."

"This is going to tick some people off," I put my soda down on the table. "Want me to call Jake and see if they're dark too? If not, we can go over there." So much for my time alone with Duo...

Duo shook his head. "Nah, it's only been a minute or two- I'm sure they're working on it." He put his head back on the sofa cushions and grinned at me. "We can do what people did before TV."

I looked at his stereo. "I don't think your radio runs on batteries."

"Ha ha." He lifted his head off the cushions and mock-glared at me.

"Go outside and play football ourselves?" I suggested.

"Heero- it's raining outside."

"So?" I lifted an eyebrow at him. "Don't tell me you've gone soft..."

"You seriously want to go out in the freezing cold rain and roll around in the mud for a few hours?" He stopped and grinned. "Maybe you are kinker than I thought..."

"What?" I protested. "It's football. You're supposed to get a little dirty!"

"Only a little?" He leaned across the sofa, well into my personal space and winked. "In that case, sure, let's go roll around in the mud together..."

I pushed at his shoulder. "That's not what I said..."

"But you did offer to spend some time rolling around with me," he tapped his chin thoughtfully. "About a month ago... after Quatre's party... surely you haven't forgotten?"

My mouth dropped open and Duo grinned. "I see that you haven't. Soooo..." He leaned forward and kissed me.

The power came back on a few minutes later, but we had lost all interest in the game.

Duo found a good use for all the food however...
