mechante_fille gave me a frog prompt. Having just watched Enchanted I was tempted to do one of the old fairy tales- have someone kiss one, or maybe have Zechs lose something down a well, but I thought those might have already been done. So I went and looked up frogs on Wiki and found some interesting stuff. Including a tie in to one of my other universes. Soooo, being lazy, I just used that tie...

Egypt Story Drabble 3

He couldn't be tired. He shouldn't be tired. But he was. He'd been searching since early this morning and now the sky was dark. The city was as asleep as a city ever got, the traffic a muted murmur, the streetlights glowing dimly in the fog.

"Angel," said a voice beside him and he started in surprise. There wasn't anyone near him! Who had spoken? "Down here," the voice sounded dryly amused and Heero glanced down at the night-dark water of the fountain. A small frog was poking its head up through the water.

"Did you speak?" he asked it and it hopped up on the ledge beside him.

"Indeed I did," it said, and suddenly there was a woman beside him. "You are Anupu's angel, are you not?"

"I am," he answered and relaxed a little. "You know him?"

"I do." She smiled widely. "One of his many relations."

"He does seem to have a lot."

"Nearly as many as you," she teased and winked at him.

"Have you seen him?" He asked. "He left last night and didn't return this morning. There wasn't- he usually leaves me a message- I couldn't- I haven't been able to find him."

She nodded. "He was called to battle in his own realm."

Anger rose inside of him. "Why didn't he-"

"You couldn't have followed him there." She scolded gently. "Not without danger- and do not say you would've faced it willingly. You would have, I know. But it might have destroyed you- and you know that Anupu would not risk your loss."

"But he-"

"He's well- for the moment." Her wide mouth turned down in a slight frown. "The battle is finished, he is victorious- but he needs to be recalled to this world before the door closes."

"How?"

She touched his arm, pulled his hand up to hers. "With this." A small hard stone carved into the shape of a frog was placed in the palm of his hands. "Find him, place this on his lips and breathe on it."

"I've been searching for him since this morning-"

"Fool," her voice was affectionate. "Did you check the shadows of your own dwelling? Do you think Anupu would go farther away from you than he had to? Hurry."

He launched himself into the air as the last word left her lips, calling down a thank you as he sped towards home. A faint splash was his only answer.

When he'd left that morning, the early light of dawn had left few shadows in the home he shared with Duo. Now the house was thick with them. He called his own light, banishing the dark, until he found the one place that the shadows lingered.

Sliding his fingers into the shadow, he found the cold inert body of his lover. Was it too late?

Placing the frog on Duo's lips, he leaned over and sent a breath of air across it- once, twice, three times.

Duo's eyes opened, his hand reached up to take the small frog from his lips. Heero sighed in relief. "Hey," his lover said softly. "I thought it was a kiss that was supposed to wake the sleeping beauty?"

Heero rolled his eyes. "Wrong mythos, idiot."
