Halloween Drabble 2
Duo had propped himself up next to the door, bowl of candy in hand. Despite my offers of food or drink, he refused to move. He was having too much fun he said, and I believed him. When we had talked about Halloween a week or so ago in the Preventers' offices, I had been surprised that Duo had never experienced any of the usual Halloween rituals. Even the mercs I had hung out with had sent me trick or treating.
Course, it was also a great way to case out an area too.
So I had invited Duo over to my house on Halloween to pass out candy. He lived in the Preventers apartment building, so I knew he wouldn't get anyone knocking on his door there- unless there was an emergency. He had accepted gleefully.
Every time the doorbell rang, Duo would open the door and pretend to either be frightened or amazed by the costumes of my neighborhood kids.
"You're doing good," I told him as he closed the door after the most recent group.
"Thanks," he smiled, his expression thoughtful. "I can totally see the appeal of this holiday. Pretending to be someone else, wearing a mask, facing down the things that scare you..."
I wet my lips with my tongue, my mouth suddenly dry. "Yeah, I see what you mean." I said after a minute, casting a glance up towards where my clown mask rested on the bookcase.
He nodded, straightening his black collar as the doorbell rang again. "I thought you would."
