Halloween Drabble 13

The wind tried to pull my coat off of me, blew my hair into my eyes. I cursed and stumbled a bit as I tried to make my way up my front steps.

I had to stop and huddle by my front door as I dug for my keys. If Duo had been there he would've blocked the wind for me... but Duo wasn't here anymore.

I swallowed hard. Everyone kept telling me that things would get better soon, that Duo would want me to keep on going, to live for him and all that bullshit.

I didn't think things would ever get better. I missed Duo too much, and I knew it. I knew I had given him too much of my heart, knew that I had relied on him too much. I was simply waiting for the others to stop watching me so closely, waiting to finalize all of Duo's details, carry out all of his last wishes before I joined him.

I managed to get the door open and myself inside. A week ago the house would've been warm and welcoming, my lover would've been in the kitchen finishing dinner, or on the sofa upstairs, waiting for me.

The house was dark and cold. I shivered in the entryway and decided to keep my coat. I went to the thermostat and turned the heat on. I didn't bother with the lights. I didn't want to see Duo's pictures on the walls, didn't want to see his coat still hanging up in the hallway.

I walked upstairs into our living room and went to look out the window. I could see by the light of the streetlight that Duo's car was still parked in the driveway. He'd taken the bike that morning.

If only he'd taken the car!

"You don't know how much I agree with you." A voice spoke out of the darkness. I whirled around.

There was someone sitting on our sofa. I couldn't tell who- in the darkness of the room, he was just a moving shadow. I reached for the light.

"No, don't!" My fingers froze.

It was Duo's voice.

"Yes, it's me. Please don't turn on the light. Don't drive me away yet."

"Duo?" I said and stepped closer to the sofa. "You can't be here... you're dead..."

"I know." The shadow rose up from the sofa, met me halfway, and slid warm arms around my waist. "I just... missed you so much."

I clung to him, felt his warmth, smelled the faint spicy scent of his cologne and found myself in tears. We held each other in the dark, and I felt his tears soak into my shirt collar. "I missed you too. Please don't leave me..."

"I have to," I felt him sigh. "I don't have much time left here. I just... had to see you one more time." His lips brushed over my cheek, and then my arms were empty. His voice echoed in my ears. "I'll be waiting for you Heero."

I stood there in my dark house and shivered. Had I dreamed it all? Had he really been there? Was he lonely without me on the other side?

I turned and looked at the window. The glass glinted in the moonlight.

He wasn't going to be alone for long.
