Kyuuketsuki Duo: The Wonder Years Part 4
Random Interlude I

They stood back, unseen by human eyes, and watched the blaze, two figures, cloaked in shadows.

::Duo?::

"Hmm?"

::Don't you think this was a little overkill?::

"What, this?" He gestured at the flaming remains of his work that night.

::Yes, this.::

"That stray burnt off the tail end of my braid. Look at this!" He held up the singed end of his hair indignantly for his companion's inspection, waving it dramatically in front of his masked face before taking it back possessively and nursing it with offended pride. "So no, I don't think it was overkill. It just got what it deserved."

::It was the stray that burnt your hair. Not the building.::

Duo shrugged. "They were obviously working together."

They observed in solemn silence, a small island of calm amidst the ruckus of the humans, scurrying about as they rushed to keep the fiery inferno from spreading to the other, neighboring warehouses.

"Hey, Heero."

:: ? ::

"There's a face beneath that mask and a body beneath those robes, right?"

Heero raised an eyebrow at him. ::You know, sometimes you ask that question and it is the most non sequitur thing.::

Duo returned the look with a long suffering roll of his eyes. "I don't ask the question because it makes sense, Heero," he explained so very logically.

The frantic humans had done what damage control they could to keep the blaze from spreading and were now resigned to letting it burn itself out, for none of their efforts against the flickering flames seemed able to dampen them, as if they were fueled by some unnatural, unseen source.

::Then why do you ask it?::

"I ask because I like it."

::There must be some better reason than that, little one.::

"I ask because of the whole continuity issue, Heero."

Heero's look was adorably confused, as if to say, 'what continuity issue?'

Duo shook his head. "Never mind. Just answer the question."

Heero sighed. Just another mystery of humanity, he supposed. Or perhaps just Duo. ::Yes, of course there is.::

"Good." His partner grinned. "Let's go."

As they silently departed to the sound of the building collapsing in on itself, the fire fighters were amazed by the abrupt lowering in flame intensity, as if whatever had been feeding them had suddenly disappeared, and they rushed in to conquer what was left of the raging inferno from moments before.
