Step Inside the Circle Part 9

In London, it was well into supper time, and the Aspects were clustered around their Lady and Quatre Bean Sidhe, attempting to shield them from curious eyes.

Relena was seated with Quatre's head in her lap, rubbing at his temples as he tried to calm himself down. She frowned as she saw him still trembling. "What are you seeing, Quatre?"

He forced himself to look up at her. "Another attack, my Lady. At the training grounds."

She stared in shock and disbelieving anger. What on Earth would have dared to mount an attack so far into her domain? "And... is everyone okay?"

"I... I think so," he mumbled, eyes going unfocused and glassy as he tried to reach out for some feeling - any feeling. Reaching out for Trowa.

All four women took a deep breath as he calmed visibly. Quatre finally sat up a bit unsteadily. "They are okay, though Trowa is still upset and worried. I caught glimpses of... a little girl. With red hair. It might be... Goddess, it could be his niece, and it would explain it, if she got free and Balor sent another of his lesser demons after her. It wouldn't know to stop and turn back when it reached our lands..."

Relena's frown deepened, and she turned to Hilde. "Call the house on your cell. If the girl is Treize's daughter, we need to post extra security..."

Hilde was already dialling, though her eyes never stopped scanning the crowds. If some creature were brazen enough to attack the Residence, there was no reason why a similar attack couldn't happen to them now.

In the meantime, Quatre was attempting to straighten his tie and hair to something a little more respectable. They were in the lobby of their hotel when the feeling came - a horrible ache that almost made him black out. He knew what it was immediately, and his heart had gone cold. He always got that feeling when Trowa was in danger, but the druid's panic and anguish quadrupled the sensation from an annoying buzz in his mind to the pain of getting smacked with a cricket bat to the skull.

He leaned closer to hear as the call went through and one of the lesser priestesses, Sylvia, answered. The girl's voice was rushed and shaky, even over a mobile phone and at a distance. Hilde actually looked amused - it didn't seem as though Sylvia was stopping for air as she spoke...

Rolling her eyes, Relena pulled the phone from her protector's hands. "Sylvia, this is Relena."

Even Noin twitched a small smile as they all heard a gasp at the other end of the phone.

Relena caught Quatre's eyes. "We know about the attack already. I take it everyone is okay? ... Really? That's interesting... Good. Please convey our best wishes to Trowa, and get the child settled in... Oh, they did already..."

Quatre smiled at the banter, but then shuddered, his expression going from calm and amused to alarmed and angry in less than a second. There was something not too far away, and it was definitely NOT friendly! "My Lady, we must go. Now."

Relena could feel it, as well - tendrils of malice surrounding them. She gave the Banshee a nod. "Sylvia, I must go. Find Greine - tell him London is not safe for us and we will be returning immediately... no, I do not require his presence, I am amply protected, but he must be made aware and have a driver waiting for us at the airfield. He and Lord Nuada should be prepared for us and for trouble as we get closer to the Residence. We will be available at this number. Thank you. Good bye."

By the time she looked up again, Quatre had gone to the counter to check them out, and Hilde was heading back up to the suite to pick up their luggage. She turned to Sally. "We should be harder to target when we're moving. It would be extremely risky for the enemy to engage us here."

Sally nodded her agreement, but Noin shook her head. "Balor himself came after Duo in his hometown. He has no compunctions about collateral damage or exposure. He does not care. And with Zechs..."

"The bastard has no honour," Sally growled. "I for one would like him to show his face."

"No, you would not," Relena said quietly, but with enough coldness that the other two turned to look at her in surprise. "He shrugged off Gwydion's attack - only Greine and Nuada were capable of harming him. I would be in no hurry to face such an enemy if I were you."

"What?" Noin scoffed, her voice rising, "You won't face the man who attacked your precious Gwydion and his niece?! The man who killed my love..."

Sally interrupted, "That isn't what she meant! Damn it, Morrigan, you only hear what you want to hear, anymore!"

"Do not mock me..."

"Enough." They fell silent immediately, hearing the snap of command and irritation in Relena's voice. "We should not be discussing these issues here. But Noin, let me assure you," she turned to the other woman and took her cold hands in hers, "no one is going to let Balor escape retribution for what he has done. You have my word on that."

Noin looked down, unable to meet the intensity of Relena's eyes, and dropped a small curtsy. "My lady."

Quatre walked over, wise eyes silently saying that he'd missed nothing of their conversation. "The hotel is arranging our return flight with the airport right now. I haven't contacted our solicitors yet..."

Relena gave him a gentle smile. "It's okay, Quatre. They can survive tomorrow's session without us, I'm sure." She slid her arm through his and pulled him closer to her side, recognising the look of worry on his face. "But now, since we have time, tell me more about this little girl..."

~*~

Heero was having a difficult time keeping a straight face.

Trowa Barton was arguably one of the most powerful people he'd ever met, pairing sheer talent with druid-trained intellect and coming out with something both original and frighteningly effective. But he still had his weaknesses.

Apparently, a pointed glare from a fifth grade teacher was one of those.

He rarely cowered to anyone, but when Wufei had stepped between him and the door to Mariemeia's new room with an "I-know-you're-up-to-something-stupid-and-did-you-really-think-you-could-fool-me" look on his face, the High Druid backed away immediately. If he weren't worried for the little girl's welfare as well, Heero might have laughed.

As it was, he leaned slightly closer to Duo and asked in a low voice, "Did he have many disciplinary problems in his classes?"

Duo successfully covered his snort with a cough. "Not after the first week, no. He's scary when he's in 'professor' mode."

"I can hear you, Maxwell, don't forget that," Wufei remarked dryly, not bothering to turn from his 'discussion' with a very worried uncle.

Duo shrugged. "Nothing wrong with his hearing either, apparently." He lifted his voice. "She really is okay, Trowa, and Wufei is right. She needs to rest and recuperate."

"That's not the point!" Trowa leaned back against the wall, arms crossed over his chest as he glared at them all. "She's in a strange place, all alone, hurt, lonely, missing her mother..."

"If you go in there right now, Mr. Barton, you will wake her up," Wufei interrupted crisply, clearly not at all affected by the druid's complaints. "She will be overexcited and anxious. She will appear fine for a couple of hours before her energy level fades, then she will get cranky and, if you're extremely unlucky, feverish and ill. So you have a choice. Let her rest now, or put up with hours of restless and by-then uncomfortable complaining later. Your pick."

As the two continued to argue, Heero caught Duo's eye and jerked his head to the right, indicating that Duo should follow him up the corridor and away. As they turned the corner, the half breed finally let out a low chuckle. "Well, we now know what Trowa would be like as a parent."

Duo grinned back at him. "I dunno - I think it's kinda sweet. But Wufei's right; he's really good with kids. You'd never suspect him of it, but he loves 'em dearly."

"Quatre will spoil her rotten when he gets back here," Heero commented.

Duo laughed and shook his head. "A frickin' banshee... you know, he scared the living daylights out of me with all that freaky keening stuff, and then I opened the door... Whatever I was expecting to see, he wasn't it."

"Different from what you imagined?" Heero asked, curious.

Duo nodded. "Yup, and Trowa, too. You hear the word 'druid', and you get this image of a Gandalf-like guy with no sense of humour, not a young guy with cool tattoos and stuff. And then there's you..."

As the other man's voice trailed off, Heero looked over at him to find that Duo was staring at him. "What about me?"

Duo stopped, regarding the other man seriously. "I like you, and still... I really don't know what to make of you. I don't know much about what you - what we are. There are times you seem so normal, and then something happens and you're suddenly this powerful, overwhelming person, and yet you're still you... It's very confusing, and I feel it happening to me, as well."

Heero gave him a very small smile. "You're not anything different than you were before, Duo. You're just aware of another aspect of yourself that you couldn't recognise before you met up with us. This is normal for you and me."

"Sure. Yeah." Duo stretched and grimaced as his aches and pains began to make themselves known. "I can't believe that was your version of taking it easy on me. At this rate, I'll finish my training, but I'll be too sore to do anything with it when you take me to see the Amazon chick."

"Scathach? Heh - don't bloody well let her hear you calling her that!" Heero chuckled. "You know, you could heal yourself with little more than a thought."

Duo blinked. "I could, couldn't I? But then what would I have to complain about?"

"I'm sure you'd find something. You just want to know where the hot tub and sauna are."

The long-haired man snorted. "Don't tempt me. Will I have time before supper to pay the kennels a visit? I should check up on Kahn."

"Mind if I come along?" Heero asked.

Duo smiled. All of this attention from Heero felt good - it felt real good. "Sounds like a good idea."

The exterior doors closed behind them seconds before Sylvia came around the corner. Unknowingly, she continued to search the house.

~*~

Despite her growing unease, Relena managed a small smile as she spotted the car waiting for them, and its driver. She should have known Greine would trust their safety to no one else! She shook her head as Quatre handed her out of the small private jet, and called, "Greine, you didn't need to come personally."

As he came closer, she could see that he was rather heavily armed, with a serious look on his face. "I got your message - after Trowa had a vision, that is."

"A vision?" Sally asked, as she followed, eyes scanning their surroundings.

Heero nodded. "We were taking the dog for a run when the beast stopped suddenly and turned to his master, whining. Duo had felt it, too; Trowa was considerably upset. We ran back to the House - Wufei was trying to calm him down, but nothing seemed to work. Duo got him settled, and he explained - a vision of lightning and fire and you," he said, staring straight into Relena's eyes. "Then Sylvia passed your message..."

Relena patted his arm. "Trowa is back at the House?"

The half breed nodded. "He and his have mounted a guard until you return and it is safe to set Seals over the entire property."

Sally and Hilde nodded their agreement. A Seal would be incredibly draining to the druid and anyone else involved, but there was very little that could penetrate it once it was set.

Noin frowned. "And your Duo?"

Heero shook his head ruefully. "On guard with the druids. We tried to convince him to remain in safety, but he would not listen. Wufei, as well - bloody obstinate fools."

Noin rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to make another comment, but Relena cut them off. "Enough of this - let's get home and continue our discussion then."

Quatre wasted no time in herding the girls towards the waiting car; he climbed into the front passenger seat, shooting a look over at Heero as the man climbed behind the wheel. With the window closed to the back, he asked, "So what else did Trowa see?"

Heero shook his head as he pulled away. "He wouldn't tell me. Maybe he'll tell you. What happened in London?"

The blond shivered slightly. "I don't know what it was - neither do any of the girls. But something was very happy we were there, and it meant to do us harm. Given what we know of Balor-Treize, we wouldn't have put it past him to cause a scene downtown to get at us, innocents be damned if they got in the way. So we came back."

Heero just nodded again, blue eyes scanning the road ahead warily.

Mariemeia started awake, and her first reaction to being in a strange room was panic. She didn't know where she was, how she got there, where her Mum was...

She jumped from the comfortable bed and stared at the room around her - the walls were a cheerful, pale yellow, the furniture made of a dark wood that complimented the light colour. Two lamps had been left on, and in the corner...

There was a rocking chair with an afghan on it. She relaxed almost instantly. Never, in all the time she'd spent exploring her father's home, had she ever encountered anything as homey or comforting as that. She looked around again. The bedspread was a cheerful weave of rusty colours, and there was a small vase of flowers on the bedside cabinet. She sat down distractedly. Where...

She froze as it came back to her. Running - endless running and crying, gasping for air as the thing behind her came closer and closer. She hurt. She hurt all over, and just when she thought she couldn't run any further...

There was a tall man with brown hair and fiery green eyes. Another man, as well - this one with really long brown hair (even Lady Une's wasn't so nice!) and some of the brightest blue eyes she'd ever seen. She'd fallen into those eyes-

Her uncle. She'd found her uncle, and he'd destroyed the creature that had been trying to kill her. And the other man... she couldn't remember his name, but he had been nice to her and healed her completely.

She was safe.

Mariemeia's eyes clouded over with tears as she picked up a pillow and hugged it to her chest. She'd made it, but her mother...

Someone knocked at the door, and she rubbed at her eyes, desperately trying to hide her tears, though she couldn't seem to stop crying...

"Oh, you poor kid," a kind voice said. She looked up to find an odd-looking gentleman moving swiftly to kneel at her side. She'd never met a Chinese person before, but she'd seen them in films and pictures; this guy definitely looked like one of them, with dark hair, golden skin, and dark, slanted eyes. He gave her a small smile. "Do you know where you are?"

She gave him a little nod. "My uncle is here."

His smile widened. "That he is, little one. Trowa wanted to be here when you woke, but he's needed outside. I was reminded rather... forcefully, that I couldn't help out there as much as I might have wanted, so I came in here to see you, instead. May I sit?"

She just nodded. He had an odd accent as well - American?

He sat in the rocking chair and stretched comfortably. "My name is Wufei Chang. Your Uncle Trowa and his friends brought my best friend and me to this place a few days ago. He saved our lives."

"He saved my life, too," she said in a small voice, watching him warily.

Wufei nodded. "You'll be safe here. These are good people."

She tossed the pillow aside and stood up. "But my Mum is... I don't..."

"Mariemeia, listen to me," Wufei said in his best explaining-to-overstressed-kids voice. "You mother sent you here to us, to Trowa, because she wanted you to be safe. When you got here, you made her very happy. To help her out from now on, you have to keep yourself safe, and tell us what you know so we can get to your Mom. Do you think you can do that?"

Her eyes darted to the door and her jaw flapped for a moment. "I... I just want... Goddess, I don't know..."

Wufei gave her another gentle smile. "You don't have to do anything right now, Mariemeia. You were very brave getting here, and now you need to rest. Some more of our friends will get here soon, and they will want to meet you, as well, I'm sure. You should go back to bed."

She frowned. "I would very much like to see my uncle, please. Either him, or the man with blue eyes."

Wufei lifted an eyebrow. "The man with blue eyes?"

She nodded. "There was a man with very kind eyes. All I saw was blue, and then the pain went away."

Wufei grinned. "Oh, you mean Duo. He's out with your uncle as well, I'm afraid. In fact, he's the one who sent me in here."

"Really?"

He nodded and shot a mock glare to the window, but then gave her a conspiratorial look. "What he doesn't know is... he's missing out on a great snack."

There was another knock on the door, and an older woman stepped in this time, carrying a small tray bearing two steaming mugs and a plate of biscuits.

Wufei thanked the woman and gestured Mariemeia closer. "Let's dig in, shall we?"

~*~

In the backseat of the car, Relena frowned, an unnatural calm settling over her as she reached for the button that would put down the window between the driver's compartment and her seating. "Greine..."

"We feel it, too, my Lady," Heero replied softly, his eyes glowing softly in his face. She could see both his and Quatre's markings beginning to glow as the feeling of danger grew around them, and she turned to her companions.

Even Hilde's face was composed and concentrated as the Aspects sat with joined hands and hoods thrown back. Their power, unlike that of anyone else in service to the Mother, had a distinctly darker edge to it than even Quatre's, and Relena noted that Morrigan sat in the centre, where her inner darkness had the best chance of being controlled by either of her Sisters. All the same, the darkness growing around the three was unsettling to the young Priestess. Maeve and Badba were going to be hard pressed to keep Morrigan in check.

Perhaps it was a good thing that Greine had come to meet them, after all.

She could feel the safety of her own domain approaching, and she silently drew on some of her own hidden power.

Though Relena had bodyguards and appreciated their devotion and strengths, she was by no means a weakling, herself, and Zechs' murder had opened her eyes to the need to be able to protect herself. Anyone foolish enough to attack the Mother Goddess' physical emissary on Earth would learn that the hard way.

~*~

They could see the car approaching in the distance. At least, they could make out the glow of the headlights through the heavy mist that was settling in as the remnants of moon and starlight bled from the sky completely, cloaked in misty black. Trowa's eyes narrowed. Balor knew that any attack within the compound would be an utter waste of time, at least until he could completely release his powers from the underworld on Samhain night. Yet the swine had to be smarting, that his daughter escaped to safety.

He knew he should never have let it get that way, but the battle was intensely personal for him, both because of Zechs and because of his sister. He had trained for years before the brotherhood would accept him as High Druid, and the most important lesson he'd ever learned was to maintain his calm and his connection with the Earth around him. Yet as he stood waiting for his lover to return to safety, knowing that the Formorii King had suffered a great loss only hours before and at his hands, he couldn't help his nerves.

He closed his eyes and took a deep, steadying breath, letting the power of the Earth sing in his bones, in his blood.

And that deep connection was the only reason he saw the attack coming.

His eyes opened, glowing an intense green. "They are here - in the sky." He turned to the other druids around them. "Otto, head for that car and guard the path for the Lady and her Aspects. Walker, take five men and head left; I will go right. My Lord," he turned to Duo with a grave, deep expression on his face. "I have to ask you to remain here. Do not engage unless there is no other choice, is that clear?"

Duo bit his tongue, but nodded. He knew, after a long, tough day of revelations, that he still had much to learn. "Be safe, Gwydion."

Trowa's bright green eyes shone with an angry light. "Oh, I will be."

~*~

"Greine, they are overhead," Maeve called, her voice thrumming with power. "They will firebomb us in this car - you have to let me out."

Quatre nodded his agreement. "We can hold them off together, Greine." He was shifting as he spoke, the wheel on his forehead gleaming in the gloom of the car, and his fingers elongating into obsidian claws. His voice growled with menace. "Slow the car."

Relena put a hand on the two combatants' shoulders. "Be safe."

They both nodded as they climbed out through the windows and onto the roof of the moving vehicle.

Inside the car, they immediately heard the sound of the Banshee's keening war cry, matched by Maeve. In the darkness Morrigan's eyes gleamed.

~*~

The eagle tattoo was glowing on his back as Quatre rose into the air - he could see their enemy massing overhead, storm clouds gathered over their shoulders and, wrapping himself in a cloak of darkness, he rose up into their midst and just above them before he released the darkness and keened, diving for his enemies' unprotected backs.

Watching as they shrieked and scattered, he snarled in disgust, "Addu. Maeve, be careful!"

She nodded and tossed her hooded cloak aside and screamed out a challenge, both palms of her hands filling with static energy. Watching as the Addu formed up again, she drew back her arms and threw.

The results were immediate - lightning clove the sky, running from her open palms up into the attackers, while the Banshee swooped at them from behind, claws shredding them and tossing them aside like paper. The Addu tried to retaliate - red lightning streaked back down towards Hilde, but she laughed as she raised one open hand and simply absorbed the energy, immediately throwing it back at its master. The Addu - dangerous weather demons in their own right - were simply too easy to defeat, and she darted a look back at Quatre, who was slowly drifting back down to her side. It was too easy, as though...

Even as she felt their presence, she knew it was too late. Yelling, "Look out!", she leapt into the air and grabbed hold of the astonished banshee.

Too late.

~*~

Trowa felt his heart constrict in his chest as he watched, unable to do a thing - several Formorii charged from the trees on either side of the road, screaming their challenges as they fired what looked to be molten bullets at their prey. Both Hilde and Quatre screamed as they were hit and plummeted - tires squealed as Heero tried to avoid hitting them, and the car flipped on its side, sending up sparks as it skidded on the road.

He put on a burst of speed, but was forced to dodge, himself, as several more Formorii burst from the trees around him; he was surrounded, and the fact that he could not reach the Lady and Quatre was severely pissing him off. A sword in either hand, he was forced to stop and attack.

The fools would pay for daring to attack the High Druid! With a yell, the swords burst into flames before his enemies' amazed eyes and, not missing a beat, he attacked.

~*~

With Badba's help, Relena crawled out from the wrecked vehicle, her anger an almost physical force as she stared into the trees around them. Intricate vine patterns glowed silver-blue on her skin as several Formorii charged at them. She lifted a hand, and her voice crackled with power as she ordered, "Return to your ashes."

The Formorii screamed as they burst into flames, and she turned away, unconcerned - Badba was wiping down her twin daggers on a fallen enemy's shirt, calm despite the blood on her clothes and the sheer number of slain enemies around her. "Badba."

The woman nodded at her and came closer. "We have to get away from here. Gwydion will have sent help. Come."

Relena nodded, following as Badba raced towards where Quatre and Hilde were crumbled to the street ahead of them. Morrigan was already there, gingerly putting one of Hilde's arms over her shoulders and lifting the disorientated girl to her feet. Wordlessly, Badba lifted Quatre the same way and turned back to the Lady. "Relena, we have to go."

"But... what about Greine?" Relena asked, hesitating.

Morrigan shook her head. "He is fine - he went ahead to find help. I saw him." In her arms, Hilde shifted and whimpered, eyes opening halfway to glare up at her Sister.

Relena didn't notice, though - she came closer and pulled Hilde into her grasp. "I will carry her - You need to be free to defend us, Morrigan."

"As you wish, Lady."

Seeing the druids running in their direction, they turned and headed off as quickly as they could while, behind them, gas continued to leak from the car and pool under it.

~*~

Trowa raced towards them - Morrigan was calmly walking in front of the other two, a flaming whip in either hand that twisted and twirled around them, forming a protective cocoon and igniting up anything foolish enough to try and break through. Loosing his patience, he simply blasted the last few enemies in his way and ran past them, not caring where they fell.

Morrigan's eyes swung in his direction, and she sneered darkly, eyes gleaming red-

Instead of dodging the whip, he caught it in his hand, ignoring the pain that radiated up his entire arm, and yanked-

Blue energy shot up the length of the whip and, screaming, Morrigan released it, cradling her wrist against her chest, even as her eyes cleared. "G... Gwydion?"

He nodded, not stepping closer until her was sure she was back in control again. "The others?" he asked shortly.

She glanced behind her. "It was like... molten iron. They just fell..."

He nodded to her and pushed her towards Otto, who stood waiting. "Go on ahead. Go! My Lady..."

Relena stumbled slightly under Hilde's weight, but straightened quickly. "I'm fine. Greine should have told you that."

"Greine?!"

Morrigan nodded. "He was headed back this way, but you might well have passed each other."

Trowa shook his head. There was no time to worry about it - he had a priestess to protect. "Back to the compound grounds. Now."

~*~

Duo was counting heads as they trooped back in; there were several injuries, and it ached him to see so much pain. But he was still worried - Relena and her companions had not made it back to the standing stones that marked the entrance to Her domain, and until he saw them with his own eyes...

He could finally see them approaching; Trowa was in the lead, his single visible green eye glaring death at anything that got in his way, much though it appeared that his right arm was injured and no longer quite working properly. Morrigan was in the rear, flaming whips ripping up the road behind them and leaving a trail of fire in their wake. He didn't want to know what was burning. He took a quick count, and felt his blood run cold. "Heero isn't with you."

Relena looked up, her blue eyes wide in her soot-and blood-smeared face. "He... he isn't here yet?" Their eyes met.

"But Noin said..." Badba turned disbelieving eyes on her Sister. "Noin, you said he left before us. To secure the way in."

Noin didn't reply - her face was carefully blank as she stared back with red-tinted eyes.

Duo felt rage growing in his chest as he stalked forward. "You... you left him there. Didn't you? DIDN'T YOU?! He's hurt, and you just left him there!" Reaching out, he grabbed hold of her and forced her to look him in the eye.

Morrigan screamed as his eyes bore into hers, and tried to pull away to no avail. "I... he..."

Trowa reached over and pried Duo's hands loose before he stepped in and grabbed hold of her shoulders, himself. Eyes glowing green, he ordered, "Speak, Morrigan. Where is Greine? What have you done?"

She trembled in his grasp, but could not disobey the command as she fell into green, mesmerized. "I... he deserves to burn, to pay for what he has done. He watched, and Zechs died! Zechs was mutilated, and he watched it happen..."

Trowa released her, snarling in disgust, releasing her from his hypnosis. "How dare you..."

Eyes glinting red again, she struck without warning, a hidden blade heading right for Trowa's chest-

Duo grabbed her wrist and twisted - she screamed as she released the knife, going white in the face as bones cracked audibly. But as she turned her furious gaze on the Tuatha De Danaan, he had already moved inside her guard, his blue eyes sorrowful as they met hers. "I'm sorry." He back handed her sharply.

Noin sailed through the air to crumble as she hit the standing stone, and everyone turned to stare at her in shock before turning back.

Duo was already gone, running back out into the night and towards the car they could all just see down the road.

Cursing under his breath, Trowa turned back to Badba and Quatre, just coming back to himself in her grasp. "Get them back to safety." Without another word, he headed back out into the darkness as well.

He could hear the clash of metal on metal ahead - men yelling, and he took heart that none of the screams he heard were Duo's...

An explosion lit the night ahead of him, and all he could do was curse as he watched Duo's silhouette stiffen, staring aghast at the flaming wreckage of the car up ahead.

Trowa fought down his own fear and shock, even as Duo's anguished scream tore through the air: "Heero!"

A wave of calm swept over them all, and then seemed to implode as Duo screamed again. Blue fire leapt into the sky, and Trowa skidded to a halt, staring in shock. Ahead of him, the Tuatha De Danaan lord was shimmering in his own blue glow, blades gleaming death in either hand as he seemed to take a deep breath and walk towards his enemies with a determined, calm step.
