Worth Fighting For Part 14
Dream

She watched him sit on the side of the bed; his eyes were glaze over and staring at something only he could see. He wrung his hands together and everything pointed to him being scared, nervous and maybe even a little mad. She hung back in the doorway to his room, just watching and waiting for him to notice her.

Slowly his eyes refocused and he looked up at her, his eyes searching, looking for something.

'He looks so lost', she thought as he turned back to looking at the invisible thing, he had not found what he was after in the depths of her blue eyes. 'I wonder what happened. I wondered what went wrong'.

"I didn't reach him." He informed her coldly, his voice flat and emotionless as if everything had been drained from his system and he had given up hope.

"Pardon? But Quatre..."

"Quatre wasn't there. I arrived too late. I saw him shot him. He's gone, I was too slow. He's dead."

She gasped at the finality in his voice, it seem that, he too, was dead.

"But..."

"There is no but. There is nothing."

She watched as he reached under his pillow and pulled out a small handgun.

"I wanted to tell you the news and to say goodbye." He stroked the gun, his eyes fixed on the grey cold steel. "I promised I would."

She shook her head, not wanting to believe her eyes or ears.

"No, please don't. He wouldn't want this." She begged. "This is the easy way out Duo!"

He turned lifeless dark purple eyes to look at her and he raised the gun. "I must, can't you see, there is nothing left."

"No, don't you dare, don't force me to watch."

"Turn away. Goodbye Relena."

She tried to turn away, to close her eyes, to block out all sound and sight but still she stood there, fixed on his movements as he pressed the gun against his temple and his finger pulled the trigger.

Relena jumped in her sleep and her eyes snapped open as a loud bang echoed through her room. Her eyes scanned the room frantically and a thin layer of sweat covered her. She threw off the blankets and stood up, her thin legs shaking as she made her way over to the en-suite. She leaned against the cold marble sink, welcoming the coolness against her over-heated skin. She splashed cold water on to her face and dried it on a soft towel and she stared at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were red and she looked rough, her usual neat blonde hair was sticking out in all directions, her clothes stuck to her body and her skin was flushed a crimson red.

She lowered her head so her chin was against her chest and she gave a broken sob.

"Lena? Are you ok darling?"

Relena looked up as her mother stepped into the bathroom.

"Yes." She lied.

"You don't look like you are." Helen said softly. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"It was just a bad dream, I'm fine really." Relena said, forcing her voice to stay stable.

Helen sighed, she knew her daughter was lying but her daughter was just as stubborn as her father and son, she wouldn't tell her anything she didn't want her to know.

"Ok, I'm here if you need to talk."

Helen turned and walked away.

"Mum."

Helen looked back and she saw Relena run at her, hugging her tightly.

"I love you."

"Oh my, what brought this on all of a sudden?"

Relena pulled back. "I just wanted to let you know."

"I love you too Lena."

Relena hugged her mother again.

"Good night."

"Good night darling."

Helen kissed Relena' forehead and Relena returned to bed while Helen went back to her and Solo's bed.

"Is everything alright?" He asked, cuddling Helen to his side.

"She says she's fine but... she looked so lost and scared."

"She wouldn't talk?"

Helen shook her head and rested it on Solo's chest. "No, she had red eyes, she had been crying but she wouldn't say what about."

Solo stroked her hair. "She knows where we are, she'll come to..."

"Mummy? Daddy?"

"What is it Jane sweetie?" Solo asked as his youngest child entered the room.

"I can hear Lena crying. I don't like it." Jane clutched her teddy to her chest and her large wide eyes stared at Solo and Helen.

"Come and get into bed with mummy and me. We'll have a nice chat in the morning, ok love?"

Jane clambered onto the bed and she slide under the sheets between her mummy and daddy.

"Nighty night mummy, daddy." Jane whispered, her eyes flickering closed.

"Sleep well." Helen said kissing Jane's forehead in the same way she had done to Relena.

Solo reached over Jane and kissed his wife and then kissed his daughter. "Good night."

The three of them fell into a relaxing sleep while across the corridor Relena laid in bed, tears falling from her eyes, wetting her cheeks as she stared at the ceiling, her heart fearing sleep and her body demanding it.

Very slowly she drifted into sleep but her dreams were full of her brother's dead face, pale, lifeless with blood pooling around his head and his hair turning a dark brown nearly black colour as his own blood bleached it.

Devalin sat in his small office just staring into space, his mind slowly showing him many images of Duo's death. He smiled at some of them; the picture of the boy's beautiful eyes dull, full of pain as the light of life slips away to reveal lifeless blank eyes, his hair falling over deadly pale skin and his body sprawled on white tiles bathing in his own blood.

Devalin gave a long evil laugh as he stood up and grabbed his gun.

"Soon, my love." He whispered to the picture he had of Duo on his wall. "Soon your time will come and your life will be mine to take." He reached up and stroked the face with his index finger, his smile widen. "I can hardly wait."

Author's Note: Cheerful note on which to leave a chapter isn't it? Just a short one, another long one is coming up.
